About the Author

Don Freeman was born in San Diego, California, in 1908. At an early age, he received a trumpet as a gift from his father. He practiced obsessively and eventually joined a California dance band. After graduating from high school, he ventured to New York City to study art under the tutelage of Joan Sloan and Harry Wickey at the Art Students' League. He managed to support himself throughout his schooling by playing his trumpet evenings, in nightclubs and at weddings.

Gradually, he eased into making a living sketching impressions of Broadway shows for The New York Times and The Herald Tribune. This shift was helped along, in no small part, by a rather heartbreaking incident: he lost his trumpet. One evening, he was so engrossed in sketching people on the subway, he simply forgot it was sitting on the seat beside him. This new career turned out to be a near-perfect fit for Don, though, as he had always loved the theater.

He was introduced to the world of children’s literature when William Saroyan asked him to illustrate several books. Soon after, he began to write and illustrate his own books, a career he settled into comfortably and happily. Through his writing, he was able to create his own theater: "I love the flow of turning the pages, the suspense of what's next. Ideas just come at me and after me. It's all so natural. I work all the time, long into the night, and it's such a pleasure. I don't know when the time ends. I've never been happier in my life!"

Don died in 1978, after a long and successful career. He created many beloved characters in his lifetime, perhaps the most beloved among them a stuffed, overall-wearing bear named Corduroy.

Don Freeman was the author and illustrator of many popular books for children, including Corduroy, A Pocket for Corduroy, and the Caldecott Honor Book Fly High, Fly Low.

This is a cute, short overview of Hanukkah for toddlers. Everything is here-- having a party, lighting the hanukkiah (although the author uses menorah), eating latkes, exchanging presents, playing dreidel, and singing.

My child loved it, especially during the holiday.

My 20 month old likes this book. Not a very thick book so may need to read a couple of times

I really wanted to get a book for my 10 month-old grandson that would give him a beginner's look at Chanukah, and I love Corduroy, so I chose this one. Other's reviews also influenced me.

While this book touches on the most well-known aspects of Chanukah, it does not go into any detail about each of them. I was hoping it might say a little more about the menorah, the dreidel game and maybe name a Chanukah song, but it doesn't. It just glosses over each idea, as if to familiarize non-Jewish children with the words they might here around Chanukah-time.

The good thing about this, though, is it prompted me to expand on the ideas on each page. I said "Look, Corduroy wears a kippah on his head like you did!" or "let's count the candles! One, two...." and on the last page, since I know Chanukah songs, I sing one for my grandson.

My grandson loves the book, but next year, when he's almost two, I will add a more detailed book to his collection.

Sweet bear in the story of Hanukkah. It's easy to understand for the little ones. Corduroy, the bear follows throughout the story. Colorful and easy lettering

Excellent little children's book that wraps together the story of Hanukkah so it appeals to children of many ages. My 1 1/2 year-old grandson loves the story and I loved reading it to him.

My son received this book for Hanukkah when he was 9 months old. Around a year old (long after Hanukkah was over) he became interested in this book and it became one of his favorites. Now he's almost 20 months old, old enough to understand what is happening in the book and to be excited for Hanukkah. I think it's an adorable little book that I would have easily overlooked if my son wasn't such a fan. If you're looking for a Hanukkah book for your toddler, I highly recommend Happy Hanukkah, Corduroy.
