Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–The literal maid returns, treating readers to more mishaps and misadventures. It is autumn, and the Rogerses have decorated for Halloween. When Amelia Bedelia arrives for work, she thinks that someone has vandalized the house. Once she learns that the family is having a party, she gets into the swing of things by cracking (breaking) a window and adding leaves to the dining-room table. As darkness falls, the festivities begin. After partaking of the gruesome refreshments, the costume contest is held, but no one can find Amelia Bedelia. Finally, it's revealed that she's been there all along–dressed as a scarecrow. Sweat's amusing watercolor-and-pen illustrations add to the zaniness of the story. Funny signs abound, from the tombstones on the lawn to the descriptions of the gruesome goodies. The costumes that Amelia Bedelia creates for the children are amusing and easy to duplicate. The illustrations extend the wordplay and help beginning readers understand the story. This reader is excellent for children ready for the challenge of learning the difference in meaning between such words as "which" and "witch," visually and semantically. A happy haunting with Amelia Bedelia where the laughs outweigh the screams.–Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

More About the Author

Herman Parish was in the fourth grade when his aunt, Peggy Parish, wrote the first book about Amelia Bedelia. The lovable, literal-minded housekeeper has been a member of his family ever since. Peggy Parish died in 1988. She would be proud and delighted to know that with Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia; Bravo, Amelia Bedelia!; Amelia Bedelia 4 Mayor and now Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia, her nephew is carrying on -- for a new generation of readers -- the tradition she began years ago.

In His Own Words... "In true Amelia Bedelia fashion, I backed into writing these books about the literal-minded housekeeper who children laugh at and love. Amelia Bedelia was created by my aunt, Peggy Parish. Although she passed away in 1988, Peggy still received fan mail from children. They wondered when the next Amelia Bedelia book would be out. Then other children's authors wrote and volunteered to continue the series. I felt uneasy about Amelia Bedelia leaving our family. As I was in the fourth grade when she first appeared, I had literally grown up with her. So I decided to try to write a new Amelia Bedelia adventure. My two sisters and my family were very supportive and encouraged me. I'd had experience in writing advertisements. I reread the Amelia Bedelia stories to figure out what made them funny. I realized that everyday life overflows with idiomatic expressions, literalisms, and homophones. It's amazing more people don't get confused-besides Amelia Bedelia! My first book, Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia, took me a year to think about and one night to write. I had been collecting ideas, homonyms, and expressions. Whenever I heard them, I jotted them down: on napkins in restaurants, on my newspaper while riding the bus, and on agenda sheets in business meetings.

I stockpiled these fragments in a folder until one Sunday night, with my family asleep, I decided that it was now or never. I sat down around ten o'clock and began to write. I was so focused on the story that I finished as the sun came up on Monday morning. Naturally, the story needed revision, but the essence was captured in that all-night writing spree.

I am fortunate that my editor, Susan Hirschman, and the illustrator, Lynn Sweat, had worked with Peggy on many Amelia Bedelia books. That helped make the transition from Peggy's books to mine as seamless as possible.

I feel very lucky to be writing Amelia Bedelia books and continuing a family tradition. But the best reward was when a child wrote Peggy Parish a fan letter. It said that Good Driving, Amelia Bedelia is the best book she has written. To me, that's the highest compliment I could hope for."

3.0 out of 5 stars Non-Scary Halloween Story, but Disappointing for Amelia Bedelia, October 4, 2011

This review is from: Happy Haunting, Amelia Bedelia (I Can Read Book 2) (Paperback)
It's Halloween, and the Rodgers are getting ready to host a fun Halloween party complete with spooky decorations and a costume contest. Their maid, Amelia Bedelia is all ready to help out. In fact, she's been helping with costumes. But when Mr. Rodgers says something that offends her, will that put a damper on things or will Mrs. Rodgers help Amelia come up with a plan for revenge.

I'll admit, it's been years since I read any Amelia Bedelia books. When my brother and I were kids, the books were fairly predictable - Amelia would be given a series of instructions, and she'd misinterpret them and do what she was literally told. People would get mad, but she'd appease them with something delicious she had made. None of that is here, and that was disappointing. Yes, there are a few plays on words in the book that are fun, but it's not what the original books were like.

The story that is here really could have been told with any set of characters. But if you are looking for a fun story for your early reader, you could do much worse than this one. There's nothing scary here. The only potentially scary moments are told through the comical illustrations and are funny rather than scary. Kids might need some help with some words, but most early readers should be able to make it through this book on their own.

This isn't a bad book, but those looking for classic Amelia Bedelia word play and puns will be disappointed.
