5.0 out of 5 stars HAPPY HOUR - Simply fabulous !
This disc contains a whooping 18 songs. There are 3 brand new compositions by GERRY BECKLEY, founding partner of the super group AMERICA. He has penned such hits as I NEED YOU, SISTER GOLDEN HAIR, DAISY JANE, ONLY IN YOUR HEART, ALL MY LIFE etc. The 3 new songs are tremendous, very warm, very melodic & of course with intricate arrangements by GERRY who already has a few...

2.0 out of 5 stars what's the point
I have to disagree with the other reviewers here. I have all of Gerry's albums, and really love them. But why would I want to buy a best of from only two albums, plus a couple of side projects? To me, I would have far preferred a new album. And 'Hang your head high', one of the three new tracks is a dreadful, tuneless thing with Beckley singing out of tune and trying to...

The 3 new songs are tremendous, very warm, very melodic & of course with intricate arrangements by GERRY who already has a few solo releases, the most recent is the tremendous HORIZONTAL FALL, don't miss that one. The other 15 songs are re-mixes & live versions. The fine diversity of GERRY's talents is quite evident here, every song is a new journey. The live versions are quite intimate, it is GERRY at his very best, only GERRY can deliver like this. The song MONSTER really hits home for warmth & intimacy. GERRY is a musicians musician & this disc is testament to his genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview, March 9, 2009

Happy Hour is an excellent overview of the long time America member's solo career. It includes tracks from his previous solo efforts (Van Go Gan, Go Man Go, and Horizontal Fall) plus songs from his colaboration with the Beach Boy's Carl Wilson and Chicago's Robert Lamb. This is a very strong collection and includes several songs that shudda been hits. My favorite is Emma. If you only buy one Gerry Beckley CD, this should be it.

HERE IS A COLLECTION OF MUSIC THAT TRULY DESERVES TO BE HEARD AND ENJOYED BUT IN OUR AGE OF PRE-FAB AMERICAN "IDLE" SWILL, THIS GEM WILL BE OVERLOOKED. A GREAT COMPILATION OF MR. BECKLEY'S FINEST EFFORTS, IT WILL BE EMBRACED BY LOYAL AMERICA FANS (I HOPE) IF THEY KNOW IT EXISTS. IF NOTHING ELSE, GERRY CAN BE QUITE PROUD OF HIS ARTISTRY AND MUSICIANSHIP (ALTHOUGH THAT DOES NOT PAY THE BILLS). I HOPE THEY MAKE $$$$$$$$ ON THE ROAD. AMERICA IS STILL TREMENDOUS IN LIVE PERFORMANCE.

To me, I would have far preferred a new album. And 'Hang your head high', one of the three new tracks is a dreadful, tuneless thing with Beckley singing out of tune and trying to sound 'cool'.
Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic disc, November 25, 2011

I bought this disc after Amazon suggested I listen to it. Virtually all the songs are suprisingly great. It has motivated me to go back and collect the rest of the America albums I didn't already have to complete my collection. If you like America you'll love this and won't be dissapointed.

As always Gerry did an unbeleivable job. With his solo albums as well as his America albums he never lets down the true music lovers. No matter what mood you are in he has something that will touch your heart again and again. All his songs will always stand the test of time. I cannot wait to get Unfortunate Casino. I know he will keep up his wonderfull work.

Somehow I missed this gem when it came out, and was thrilled to see Gerry had a solo record I did not know about. I had completely enjoyed the Horizontal Fall album more and more after many listens, but did not make the purchase when it first came out after hearing the samples of the songs over the internet. Boy was I wrong, as It's one of my favorite discs, and now Happy Hour joins it in heavy rotation in the car. Great songwriting and beautiful pop hooks, make this a must have. Gerry continues down the path of proving to be one of the great American song crafters of our time. The flow of the album in terms of song choices also makes this a great summer drive and I enjoy these two discs as much as anything from America and that is saying allot!!!
