My Guilty Pleasure of 2004,
By alex "Music Lover" (Barcelona, Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happy Love Sick (Audio CD)
I must admit it. Shifty's cd is going to be my guilty plesaure of the year. Guilty in the sense that I'm aware of all that the cd lacks and aware too of all the things this cd wrongly overpasses, but I just can't avoid the urge to play it repeteadly.
It's basically a feel-good-in-the-sun cd with all the things that that means, including the silly lyrics reflecting the macho-jackass "This is gonna be your lucky night, babe" attitude so overheard and overplayed, and has got the counterpart wich really doesn't help at all to get things better: the moving ballads, the two or three songs that must prove everybody that appart from having fun, driving, drinking, sunbathing and (trying to) have sex, life has treaten you badly, you were (or still are) on the wild side and can be dangerous w/o losing your cool attitude. Dangerous way of thinking, I might say (take for instance the verse "you learn from my mistakes, but it's more fun to follow me" on "When We Were Young"). Uh-uh... The singing reeks of the pseudo-rap flavour so well known of summer hits and there is the scent of bands like Sugar Ray, 311 and (surprise) Crazy Town all over it (whcih is not a bad thing at all, don't misunderstand me) So, what is leading me to give "Happy Love Sick" 4 stars? The sheer pleasure of it. Songs are catchy. "Lolita", "Slide Along Side" and "Stary Eyed Surprise" might be the best tracks (Paul Oakenfold's behind the last one, which is a guarantee) and I will even admit that "All Along" is superbely written, it perfectly catches the feeling of discovering that your best friend is turning into something else. Popcorn feelings, candy lyrics, sunny melodies and summer beats. Don't blame it on Shifty. For a strange reason, he knows what he's doing. I hate the majority of lyrics and being Spanish (eventhough having studied English since I was 8) luckily allows me to disconnect from them and only focus on the rythm when I want to. I'm still freaking out that I'm enjoying it as much as I do, but, oh well, who cares? Ease your mind.

I think the Album is fabulous for people who have fun in life, the album brings the sun to shine. You have raggea, pop and uptempo songs on that record but also songs with great lyrics like a better place or take away the pain. You can not compare the songs with Crazy Town , this is a whole other kind of music (I'm since ever crazy town fan), Shifty is doing his own thing. When you like "California-Feeling-Songs" then buy this record :) !

I was browsing the music aisle and saw this new release of Shifty. I was kinda sceptical but was like hmm lets just give this a shot. And boy was I surprised...this is like the most kick ass album ever. I love most of the songs and the beats are catchy. Highly recommended. If you liked Butterfly, you'll like this one.
Go Shifty!!

WOW-
I admit I was a little curious about this album when I saw it was coming out. I mean Butterfly was my JAM! So I was excited to see what Shifty would come with this time around. I honestly am suprised...This album is way better then Crazy Town. I love so many of the songs! My favorite is "When we were young" It reminds me of another summertime "fun" hip-hop classic....Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff's "Summertime". I also gotta say "All Along" is a song everyone can relate to. And "Halo interlude".......AAAAWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I recomend this album to anyone who wants to get the perfect lazy summer day at the beach album!

Shifty Shifts To A Smoother Sound,

Shifty Shellshock, one of the leads for the decent band 'Crazy Town' has gone on and put out a solo album. I was little hesitant about purchasing it because I was unsure how he would sound by himself without the edgier back up of his bandmates. To my surprise, this album turned out to be quite a breezy gem. Right off the bat, he hits the ground running with a light, yet catchy beat. If you liked the breezey nature of "Butterfly" from 'Gift of Game' then you will most likely enjoy the vibe and content of this album. the first 9 songs are about love, seeking women, and preoffessing sexual desries. Non of the songs really stray into a vulgar category, which is refeshing to hear in music these days.
Props should also go to Shiftys guest vocalist, TC who does all the singing on the album. He has a smooth, catchy voice and it compliments Shiftys gravelly rap voice. "Take Away The Pain" takes a drastic side step from the love them that this album focuses on and it is a wonderful detour. The song has a bit of a sad element to it yet offers a slight tinge of hope. Shifty does great with his rap on this and of course, TC is amazing as he sings the chorus. Happy Love Sick is a great effort and a nice break from someone who is more known for edge over softness... and with this collection of songs, you get a little bit of everything from a man as diverse as his numerous tattos.

I love this album! It is so much fun. Shifty is a hitmaker! No way to get the lyrics and the tunes out of your mind once you hear them. Slide Along Side, great summer song, Turn Me On, wow! When We Were Young is so cute. And Loving You, the Minnie Ripperton song, oh my God! - the ultimate love song.

Now, I am a believer in the Darkhorse, the underdog. I purchased the Darkhorse album by Crazy Town. I also waded through the mixed bag that was Paul Oakenfold's Bunnka. Now I have come to realize why I push for the underdog so much. They occasionally win.
This album is superbly produced, and is instrumentally superior to almost all pop, rock, and rap albums so far this year. There are three main factors into this album. It is perfectly timed for one. TC and Shifty shine together, and are an excellent pair. Thirdly, the instrumentation just fits. Just listen, I can't describe it to you, because I have a bias towards Shifty Shellshock already, but you won't be disappointed.

I obviously got this cd after having heard the two songs on the radio (XM radio - gota love it!)
I am the kinda guy who yes - i will admit - i have a habbit of listening to mainly the pop music - top 40 ya know. Its rare for me to find an album that i can listen to most of the songs and enjoy them. This cd is one of those rare few cd's that i actually enjoy most if not all of the songs (many of them i like alot - but even the ones i don't like that much - i still can listen to - because they still are pretty good) Sound quality of the recording and mix mastering was done wonderfully. Very good to hear when you are blasting your ears out on your car system, or listening to some grooves while cleaning up round your house at college on your custom built home audio system (yes - i am an audiophile - music is in my soul - it is my soul)

"Shifty" taking a step forward yet not going anywhere...,

In Crazy Town he brought us what, one song to remember? Butterfly. Then along came "Stary Eyed Surprise" with Paul Okenfold which was what, a Butterfly flow with a basic beat? Regardless, Both songs entertained us and brought in the money and fans.
After Crazy Town came to an end Shifty ran into a young man he once met a while back who was playing on the sidewalk who asked him how he made it. The young man gave Shifty a demo of his recordings, and as predictable as this story gets, Shifty and this young man paired up and Shifty went "Solo", so to speak. And then came "Slide Along Slide". "Slide Along Slide" is a feel good summer tune that will make you dance all around.....behind closed doors. Unfortunatly, this song will never take off and show Shifty's talent because it's nothing new that we haven't heard before. The song starts with the chorus, a similar (if not exact tune) LFO used for their summer jam a couple years ago. When the "flow" starts it's Crazy Town's Butterfly all over again. As we reach the 3rd verse we are reminded of a Blink182 hit then the music smoothly drifts us away with "awws" and "ohhhs" that throws Mark Mcgrath from Sugar Ray right at us. Perhaps if this song came before the others Shifty would be Britney Spears's American Idol. I won't even mention the music video that portrays Shifty as a wannabe Eminiem getting more girls than Snoop Dog himself. As stressed by Shifty, this really is a fun summer song. It's just too bad it's not this summer... The rest of the albumn is very pop oriented. And from Shiftys "Crazy Town" days he must of learned something from MTV, If you can't beat 'em you might as well join 'em. Unfortunatly you won't see him shaking the hands of Blink, NFG, Britney, Justin and Ashley Simpson at the VMA. But hey maybe he will do a video with Fred Durst!! :) I gave this Albumn 3 stars. Even though it's predictable and we heard it all before it still makes one fun albumn of summer songs that honestly will make you feel good. I applause Shifty for delivering a fun happy albumn instead of a dark one. However, turn off MTV the next time around man. Want a fun one? Buy it! Want original? Get a time machine and visit the Beatles/Elvis Pressley/Doors/Guns N Roses/Aerosmith. |
