Book Description

June 1, 2004

"Happy Maisy Coleman’s holy rite of passage roars past a unique set of guide posts including, a Holocaust-survivor psychiatrist; a carnal mother from hell; an Evangelical sinner of vast theology; with Frank Sinatra, of all people, as a neighborly pragmatist. There are few trips in life (and books) as bizarre, exhilarating and affecting as this one."—William Kinsolving, author of The Diplomat’s Daughter and Bred to Win

This is an irresistible multigenerational story about the Coleman family, early pioneers of the Salvation Army, who evolve from the darkest pits of poverty into the height of wealth, sensuality and beauty. The mystical, three-dimensional saga is narrated by great granddaughter, Happy Maisy Coleman, who captures the searing heartbreak of her rich and complex dysfunctional family with a surprising mix of intuitive genius and humor. A novel with a distinctly American touch, Happy Maisy Coleman dives into such fleshy subjects as female sexuality, Christianity, insanity and forgiveness.

Juli I. Huss is the author of The Faux Gourmet: A Single Woman’s Confession on Food and Sex and Dish. She has been a repeated guest author and columnist on ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, Good Day New York, CNBC, CNN, Lifetime, AM Los Angeles, AM Seattle, AM San Francisco, AM Atlanta, Geraldo, The Michael Jackson Show (radio), The Dennis Praeger Show (radio). She is as an adjunct lecturer for NYU School of Continuing Education and has written freelance articles for many magazines, including Cosmopolitan and Manhattan Style, interviewing celebrities such as Shania Twain, Lauren Hutton, Lou Reed, Carol Alt, Naomi Judd and Stephen Baldwin.

About the Author

Huss began her writing career as a weekly food columnist for "The Two Rivers Times" in Redbank, New Jersey. Then Juli traveled to Czechoslovakia, Brazil and then onto Japan supporting herself with freelance assignments for Mode, Cosmopolitan, Manhattan Style, Beauty, Holiday Home & Entertaining, Special Reports, Natural Living Today, Aveda, and Hamptons magazines. Upon her return from Japan, Juli sat down and wrote "Happy Maisy Coleman," a novel she had waited five years to write, surviving many, many days of relentless fear and inner loathing waiting for the inspiration to arrive. Juli I. Huss lives in New York City.

This is an extraordinary book, a real gift for the soul. Maisy and her family ladle out wisdom, guidance, hope and love - all with humor, honesty and imagination. The genius of the book, I think, is that Ms. Huss has given us a work of true spiritual inspiration without self righteousness or religiosity. Her wisdom is accessible, her vision practical, and her characters become friends you wish you knew. I'm giving this book to my friends, which is an even better review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Inspiring, June 12, 2004
By
This review is from: Happy Maisy Coleman: A Novel (Paperback)
This is one of the most powerful books I have read. There is so much in here to take away with you - words of incredible wisdom, hopefulness and a true feeling of faith and that we are being guided along our paths. Juli allows you to really become a part of each character and to relate to their individual issues. I know I will go back and reread parts of this book over and over - especially the words of Porter Coleman.

I am honored to have had the Coleman family share their story with me.

What a wonderful book written by a very astute woman. I'm so glad I bought this. I feel lifted up to a higher perspective around love and healing. I literally was crying at the beauty of concepts and the prose. Reading this book was like being with one of your best friends who always knows exactly the right thing to say that will help you grow up and see the world from a more serene place.
