4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD from newcomer Matthew West., January 22, 2004
By
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
"Happy" is the major label debut from singer/songwriter Matthew West. The album truly does live up to its title as it consists mostly of upbeat driving hook-filled rock tunes with joyful and hopeful lyrics.
Standout tracks include the lead single and album opener "More", the title track, "I Can't Hear You", "Out Of My Hands" and "The Lie". Indeed, there are not any weak tracks on this album as it displays an even balance of heavy rockers and ballads. The overall musical sound is a cross between Steven Curtis Chapman, The Newsboys and The Paul Colman Trio.
Matthew West has definitely left a positive impression with this debut release. If this album is of any indication, West surely does have a promising and long-running career ahead of him.
Check out "Happy". It'll make you feel that way after listening to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars high flying instrumentals/vocals with home hitting lyrics, September 7, 2004
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
I loved the tracks "More" and "Happy" on the radio, and I had to order the rest of the cd. Matt writes about just basic life, like getting shot down by the troubles of life, or maybe you're on a "happy high" of life, and enjoying it. He covers all aspects, and I relate to them all. I heard that he actually has been on the music scene for a few years, because he was just writing songs for big name artists in Christian music like Rachael Lampa and Sara Groves. He proves in this cd that he is a performer just as well.
The inspiring words cut through the excellent instrumentals, unlike other artists who often use distasteful lyrics and have to hide them. The instruments are loud enough though, so you can just rock out with the accompaniment if you want to. I hope he continues to write and perform for himself. He picked me up when I was feeling down in the dumps one day, and I'm sure he can do the same for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs I've purchased this year!!!, September 16, 2004
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
This CD is wonderful, every track is good. You know how it is these days....when you buy a CD and there's only a couple decent tracks on it and the rest are so-so filler? Not the case w/Matthew West's "Happy". Every track is so good, it's hard to pick a favorite, although if I had to pick one maybe "More" would
be my pick...but that's a tough choice as the whole CD is EXCELLENT!! We saw Matthew West on stage at FISH FEST this summer, ran out and bought his CD the next day. I've given this CD as a gift and every time I've done so, the person I gave it to always says it's one of the best CDs they've ever had. This CD is upbeat, drive-with-the-windows-down music, but they lyrics are also so good that it's something to really listen to with the headphones on when you're looking for songs with meaning. The message is clear: God loves you, God is there for you, it's going to be OK. This is a top notch CD...look for more from this artist in the future, there's no doubt about that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, September 6, 2004
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
This is hands down the best CD I've bought this year. It's upbeat and you can't help but sing out loud in the car, at home or where ever. The song "More" is a wonderful ballad type song that makes you realize just how mush God loves you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Each song is special . . ., March 20, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
Hello and thanks for reading my review! I hope it gets you interestd in purchasing this wonderful CD. After I heard More and You Know Where to Find Me on the radio, I knew I just had to look into Matthew West's album. It seems that those 2 songs got the most popular and they should be! They are great songs along with all of the others. Here is my opinion on the songs . . .

More - This is one of the best songs on the album and a great opening that introduces and gets you into the CD. It makes you think "I wish I would have known about this guy sooner!" The tune and lyrics are wonderful, and I really like the meaning of it . . . "I love you more than the sun and the stars that I taught how to shine. You are mine, and you shine for me too. I love you yesterday and today throught the joy and the pain . . ."

Happy - This is the song the album was named after, but I don't think it's the best song on the CD. I don't really like the chorus, but the rest of the song is great! It's pretty fast (the "unchorus" part I mean) and I really like it. It's a pretty good song.

Turnaround - This is also a really good song . . . lyrics and all. It's another one with a neat tune, and I like it!

I Can't Hear You - This is a fun song with great tune as usual. I also really like this one.

You Know Where to Find Me - This one is, I think, is my very favorite! I heard it on the radio one day, and I thought "I just have to check out Matthew West!" It's a really good song, and with very meaningful lyrics. I often find myself repeating this one just to hear it again. It seems to be everyones favorite as it is the most popular Matthew West song on the radio.

End - This is, again, another good song, and the end of the song is kind of funny.

Out of My Hands - This song has the most powerful lyrics to me. The lyrics are what caught my attention . . . not the tune or anything. I find it helpful in times when I need to trust God with things. ". . .there's too many things that I don't understand; so it's into your will, and it's out of my hands."

Lie - "Dont' believe the lie. Don't buy in to what they tell you. It will only make you cry. I've been there and I'm here to tell you. What you got inside your soul deep down you know the truth won't hide. Dont' believe the lie." This is a good song and I guess what I quoted sums it up!

Every Second - "I don't want to let this moment fade away. I want to soak up every single second in your presence." This song has great lyrics along with a great tune.

My Finest Hour - I have to admit I don't like this song at all. I mean it SO slow that you can't even tap your foot to it! It's different than the others. But I realized that every CD has one of those songs . . . the kind that you just can't like.

Curtain - This song is a perfect closing to the CD. I've only heard a few song that end their CD well, and this is one of them. It's a really great song to me with great lyrics.

Most CDs I have to skip through the songs, but with this one, I can listen to it straight through. That's the kind of CD I like. , and Matthew West is truly a happy guy that's serious about God. You really should check into this CD - it's all great music that never gets boring. Thanks for taking the time to read my review, and I hope it helped you out!
God Bless!

P.S. I just discovered this a while ago . . . if you don't stop the CD after the last song and just keep it going, there's a surprise at the end. It takes a few minutes though, but just keep it playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
This CD is perfect. Every word and beat is moving! I stumbled upon this CD by chance and now I listen to it constantly! I expecially listen to it when I am in a low mood; the upbeat tempo lifts your spirits fast! His sound crosses age gaps and everyone I know who hears his the CD (Christian or not) loves this CD. I get people asking me all the time, "Who is singing"? His song that most people are familiar with is "More". I even recently heard it at a bridal show! And it was inferred at the show that the song is quite popular for weddings. I think if you listen to the clips and want to hear a longer sample you will fall in love with this CD. You will not be disapointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars It makes me "Happy", September 4, 2004
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
My best friend has been listening to Matthew West since day one. However, it wasn't until the second to last weekend in July of 2004 that I understood what the big deal was. He performed at my county's fair. Since then, I've been hooked and got his album on my next payday. Not only is the album dead on with the things that I feel, but the songs were penned by an extremely sweet, kindhearted, and down to earth guy. I can say those things because I had the great privilege of meeting him. That night was an experience for me. Even if you're not a full on Christian, this is an album you'll enjoy. "You Know Where To Find Me", to me, is the best track (which is difficult to say because they're all phenomenal). Matthew's songs hit a chord with the listener. You can't help but be "Happy" when the album is over. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Matthew West. You should get this album, and I guarantee you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want "More" of Matt. West, August 12, 2004
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
The first time I heard the song 'More' on the radio I was instantly hooked and wanted to get the CD. I then found out another really good (and funny) song 'End, The' was by him and went out and got the CD immediately. Unlike most CD's where there are a few songs that just don't hit the point all of Matt. West's songs do! His lyrics are incredibly positive and the beat will never let you down. I really like how they made the CD look. And the little 'bonus' you get when you buy it.(You'll have buy it, to see what I mean.) Matthew West really blasted into Christian music. And I certainly know this won't be "The End" of his sucess.

5.0 out of 5 stars matt's the next big thing, August 11, 2004
By
This review is from: Happy (Audio CD)
a friend of mine had this cd playing in her car one day and i was hooked. i bought it the next day and have loved it ever since. all the songs are powerful and all have a great story behind them. "more" and "out of my hands" are head and shoulders above the rest, and i belive only "the turnaround" is a little weak. matt west is definatly the next big christian artist, following in the footsteps of the likes of switchfoot and jars of clay.
