Second Year Leaks,
By Animalia (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canine Cooler Medium (Misc.)
I also have a large dog who is very susceptable to the heat, so I purchased the biggest Canine Cooler bed the company makes, pursuant to their recommendation. It took a while for my dog to get used to it. I had to put my pajamas on it so she would even lie on it at first, but then I depended on it to keep her cool during our increasingly hot weather.Unfortunately, the warranty is up now and the bed has sprung little pinhole-sized leaks. I've written the company before with another difficulty regarding moving the bed (it can't be folded and it's ridiculously heavy and large once filled with water), and they were very helpful, so I'm hoping that this time when I write they will be able to provide assistance with the leaks. It was a great bed and it really helped, but it was marketed as being virtually indestructible when it actually takes a bit of care and seems to have a bit of a shelf-life no matter how well you care for it.

This is the second one that I've had to buy because the seams will come undone and leak water. My dog gets hot so easily and with summer around the corner, I felt I needed to purchase this size to [...]. up against the large canine cooler mattress. My dog is 130# so I need a large plus the medium to make an extra large cooling bed.It will keep your dog cool, but be prepared to buy another one if the seam comes undone. It has a warranty but mine fell apart after the warranty period.

Fantastic Cooler Bed,

I ordered the Canine Cooler Bed for my older dog who gets really warm and uncomfortable when the termperature gets over 70 degrees. She loves it! We have it available to her so she can choose to use it whenever she wants. It is covered with a sheet. She figured out pretty quickly that it cools her off and will lay on it when she is warm. She also has arthritis that produces heat when it flares up, and I believe the Canine Cooler Bed helps provide comfort for her arthritis as well. It was a bit messy to originally get it filled and get all the air out, but well worth the trouble.

My Border Collie cross is a high energy, heat machine. She burns more energy sleeping than most dogs burn at a full run. That said, she loves a cool surface. I was concerned for her sleeping on our stone foyer tile, as it is too shiny (GOT to replace that stuff with something less slick) and at 15 she is too old to be losing her footing trying to get up. So this mat seemed like a 'good idea' (tm). She was skeptical at first, but being a willing creature, I told her to lie on it, and stay - after 5 minutes of staring at me like I was the anti-Christ, her expression changed to delight (that dog smiles. Really.) It is her favorite place to lay down now. It is against an outer wall on tile, that is laid over a cement slab. It gets COLD - it is 26 degrees outside and I just measured the temperature of the mat at 54 degrees (It gets COLD in that foyer!). Perfect for her, she is in full sprawl. (If you don't have a Raytek MiniTemp 'gun', get one, they are terrific!) As to leaks - haven't seen any yet, but I keep her nails fairly short (they don't touch the floor) and she doesn't abuse it. She's only 64#, so not actually a large dog. Also, I don't overfill it, just enough water to surround her, not necessarily float her. I have had to add a couple of quarts of water over the past year, so the water is going SOMEWHERE, but I don't see any leaks or telltale mold under it. I'll report back if it develops leaks, but a far as I am concerned, we've gotten our money's worth - and if it does spring a leak, I'll get another one. That dog has always given us her 'all', it is the least I can do for her. update: As I said, if it ever develops a leak, I will INSTANTLY order another one! 2010-11-02: ANOTHER UPDATE! This thing just keeps going and going... Not a sign of wear yet. I have to fill it from time to time, as it does seem to transpire, but there is no pooling, just a slight occasional dampness under it. Warning: Probably best to keep it on a tile floor, as I do. 2011-12-12: Another update. Alas, my girl-dog said her final goodbye in June, but my boy-dog has taken over the 'doggie chill-o' (he was NOT permitted to use it when my girl was with me, as it was therapeutic - and her favorite place to lay down). He thinks it is great! Still works, no holes, although I do have to fill it every couple of months. The water is 'subliming' out of it, or there is a pinhole leak. Still, this is an old mat, with lots of doggie paws trouncing around on it and it still works. I would buy another one in a heartbeat!

I have had 3 years of use out of this and no leaks. I only use it in the summer for my 51 lb. dog. He actually loves this bed. I did use old ceder bed cover around it and have been carefull when emptying it and refilling it before and after the 3 summers I have had it. The reason for the cover is to help keep his nails from puncturing it, and it is still cool to the touch. It really makes a difference to a large outdoor dog on very hot days.

Living between Texas and Georgia where the summers can get very hot, I wanted something to help my furry friend stay cool. I did a lot of internet research and settled on the Canine Cooler, which had some mixed reviews but it seemed a lot of the criticism was coming from people who may not have used the product properly. My dog Emmy has had her Canine Cooler for two summers now and she absolutely loves it. As the instruction manual said she would be, Emmy was hesitant to touch it at first, but once she realized it was the coolest spot in the house she quickly made it her own. I filled it with water only once and sealed it and I've had absolutely no problems with it. It has held up very well to Emmy's nails and visits from other dogs, and is very easy to clean. A good product if you live somewhere with hot weather that can make your best friend uncomfortable even when the A/C is running.

Be careful because it's prone to failure. It does keep dog cool.,

I bought my first one in approximately 2000 to 2001 I can't remember the exact year. I had a dog that was always hot, panting and would love to lay on cold surfaces. Well, he loved it. It lasted about 2 years and then the seam in one corner ripped. I didn't notice it at first and when I did, my wood parquet floor was soaked under the bed. I called the company and they sent me a new one, free of charge. Well, that one was constructed differently and it ripped in less than a year. Luckily, I had a plastic sheet under it and I was always checking for leaks. My baby didn't need it anymore, so I just gave up on it. He'd had his spleen removed due to a benign tumor (hemangioma) and after that, he was no longer overheated all the time. I don't know what the connection was, but he was no longer excessively panting and looking for something cold to lay on. Anyway, the bed does work. Just see if you can find a pan to put under it in case it leaks. Once you follow the instructions and fill it correctly, which takes a lot of work, the bed is heavy due to the amount of water it takes.

This is the SECOND cool pad I've had that has ripped at the seam. I did not move it much nor was it abused in any way. If you would like for this to last longer than one summer, you will be disappointed.

This is the second Canine Cooler we have bought, had another for over a year for our Berner. The Berner loves it, lays on it year round inside. Got a cover for the bed in the winter. We took it with us on a 10 day road trip and had it in the back of a minivan for the trip, he loved it, and it worked well. His nails do not puncture the bed, however, the non-declawed cat recently put some pin holes in it. Ordered a water bed repair kit on Amazon [...] to fix it. Easy enough to do, and seems to work fine. This bed (the medium) we got for our new Great Pyrenees, she is quickly adjusting to it. If the seams on this one hold up, I see no reason to not stick with this as the bed of choice for our longer haired dogs. |
