Like many other fans, I eagerly anticipated the release of Kermit Ruffins' latest album. I'm happy to report that "Happy Talk" does not disappoint. For those unfamiliar with Kermit, please know that he is a trumpeter and vocalist who embodies the very essence of New Orleans jazz. There is no doubt that Kermit has inherited the rich musical legacy established by all the artists whose brilliant musicianship created jazz in the Crescent City. This list of individuals would include Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory and, of course, Louis Armstrong. Kermit is carrying on the tradition of these jazz greats while adding his own unique voice and interpretation.
"Happy Talk" features Kermit performing with an orchestra as well as with his favorite bandmates from his quintet, The Barbeque Swingers. The musicians performing on the album are some of the best New Orleans has to offer including Dr. Michael White, Corey Henry and Herlin Riley, an outstanding percussionist. The songs are an interesting mix of standards, show tunes, contemporary songs and originals. Some of the standouts are "Hey Look Me Over", "La Vie en Rose" and "More Today Than Yesterday". His latin infused rhythm arrangement in his cover of "If I Only Had a Brain" is inspired and brings a fresh perspective on a tune most commonly associated with "The Wizard of Oz". The album also includes a couple of nods to Kermit's hometown in the songs "I Got a Treme Woman" and the bluesy "New Orleans (My Home Town)". If you are looking for something that will take you on a muscial journey down to the land of dreams, look no further and purchase this disc! All Aboard!
