Turtles: One GREAT live band,
By Marvin Bartlett (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Happy Together Again (Audio CD)
Most people would probably agree on one thing in the world of recorded music: While a band might be able to wow us with what they laid down in the studio (thanks to as many takes as may be needed to get one good-sounding result), there are precious few who can do so live. (There may even be one or two groups out there that are better live than in the studio.) On "Happy Together Again", the Turtles prove, for those of us who weren't lucky enough to see them before they broke up, that they rank among the best bands ever to record live. If you already know the Turtles' music, you can't get better value for money than this disk provides. If (somehow or other) you don't know about the Turtles, you owe it to yourself to add this CD to your collection, since the Turtles were an important part of the evolution of American rock in the '60s.

Both the reviews listed here are for the 13 track cd. I've had the double album since I was a mere child, around 1977 (yes, probably bought from Columbia House). The double record album has so. so much more: 1. It Ain't Me Babe 2. You Know What I Mean 3. Love In The City 4. Lady-O 5. You Baby 6. Grim Reaper Of Love 7. Elenore 8. Let Me Be 9. Outside Chance 10. Me About You 11. Guide For The Married Man 12. The Story Of Rock And Roll 13. You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain 14. She'd Rather Be With Me 15. She's My Girl 16. Can I Get To Know You Better 17. Somewhere Friday Night 18. Happy Together 19. Sound Asleep 20. You Want To Be A Woman 21. You Showed Me 22. Battle Of The Bands 23. Gas Money 24. Like It Or Not 25. Can I Go On 26. Can't You Hear The Cows 27. Teardrops 28. There You Sit Lonely 29. Santa And The Sidewalk Surfer You haven't lived a full life until you've heard "Can't You Hear The Cows" and "Sound Asleep", which uses saws for percussion. I head "Gas Money" on Click and Clack on NPR one day and almost crashed my car in a joyous frenzy. So many of the songs are perfect, obscure gems that still sound wonderful with Howard & Mark's amazing vocals, especially the Ray Davies produced songs. Even "Guide for the Married Man", which was the theme song for the Walter Matthau movie, is a bubbly bounty of bliss. And don't even get me started about the Warren Zevon-penned "Outside Chance"! This is one of those albums I would gladly pay for if it were available as a cd -- my vinyl has been worn down with years of listening. Very funny liner notes as well. This and Mick Fleetwood's "The Visitor" are two records maybe only I would be thrilled about on disc, but hopefully there would be others. . .
