5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST non-Beatles album of the sixties!!, October 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Happy Together (Audio CD)
This is simply the most classic sixties album by a group other than the Beatles. I grew up with this album. Every song on this CD is memorable and hearing them again -- minus the scratches from my worn-out vinyl copy -- is like hearing from a long-lost friend. THIS IS THE BEST TURTLES ALBUM EVER! Fun tunes like "Makin' My Mind Up" and the novelty "The Walking Song" plus movie theme "Guide For the Married Man" are great songs which round out the entire album. The dreamy "I Think I'll Run Away" is my favorite. "Me About You" will stick in your mind for days and leave you with a smile. The CLASSIC Turtles songs "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me" are the end pieces which make this THE Turtles album to have in any collection! Rhino for years said they would release this album but never did. Thank you Sundazed for finally getting this masterpiece out. The Greatest Hits CD's didn't do the Turtles justice. This album must be heard in its entirety by any new or old-timer Turtles fan. One other note: Bill Inglot, who mastered many of Rhino's better releases worked on this re-release. For that one reason alone, you can be assured that the sonics of this CD will be impeccable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songwriting, extraordinary vocal harmonies., November 7, 2002

With the bonus tracks added in, I'd say this is the best Turtles album one can get, short of a greatest hits album. By far my two favorite Turtles songs are "Happy Together" and "She's My Girl," both with extraordinary vocal harmonies and great chord progressions, and they're both on this album. All songs on this CD are decent at worst, great at best. Some other charted songs from this CD are "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Know What I Mean," and "Me About You." Personally I never cared for the hit "She'd Rather Be With Me," probably since there's nothing that sounds like a chorus, only a wandering bridge that takes up the majority of the song. I remember hearing the pleasant love song "Me About You" for the first time on the radio in early 1969, despite "Happy Together" having been released in 1967. "Makin' My Mind Up" is a fast-paced, good-sounding, positive song in lighthearted '60s style. "Rugs Of Woods And Flowers" is a humorous, sarcastic love song with an affected voice, though I've yet to figure out exactly what is being lampooned. I believe the inspiring "You Know What I Mean" was on one of the Turtles' greatest hits albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Toss the dice, April 14, 2004

This review is from: Happy Together (Audio CD)
After The Turtles song "Happy Together" became a number one hit, their record company released an album with the same title. That's the way they did things back then. Along with the title track, the follow up smash hit "She'd Rather Be With Me" was also included. The rest of the album is basically made up of a random collection of songs from the same time period. The songs vary in quality, but most of them are good. The great "Me About You" is probably the best of these songs. The CD includes three bonus tracks. The hit songs "She's My Girl" and "You Know What I Mean" are great, but "Is It Any Wonder" is nothing special. Fans of '60s pop should enjoy this CD.

This album is a pleasant surprise. Almost "all killer no filler," it provides a great intro to the Turtles' full body of work. There are many exquisite moments on this album. If you like the work of Brian Wilson, among others, this is right up your alley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crawl Out of Your Shell With the Turtles!, July 1, 2005
This review is from: Happy Together (Audio CD)
Gear up that 1966 Dodge Dart 270 or that serious 1967 Plymouth Belvedere and get ready to enjoy some EXCELLENT music! The Turtles, an established rock band do not disappoint with this collection. The bonus tracks make a good thing even better and you might want to get a duplicate CD for when you are driving.

My favorite Turtles songs recorded in late 1965, released early 1966 are "You Baby" and "Let Me Be," which is the Autism Anthem, neither are which are on this collection of later hits. Even so, nothing detracts from this collection and the songs on this will certainly delight most listeners. For people who love sixties rock, this is certainly a welcome addition to anybody's collection.

The Turtles were known for their exceptional harmonies and chord progressions and each song on this CD is definitely worth treating oneself to again and again.

Their runaway train of a hit in 1967, "Happy Together" has been a much beloved musical staple ever since. The songs in general tend to be upbeat, cheerful and just plain feel good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a trip to the 60s with the Turtles, September 4, 2007

Take a trip back to a time when these happy go lucky songs briefly masked the trials of Viet Nam. This is a sure-fire pleaser for any 60s (and Turtles) buff. The title song "Happy Together", "You Know What I Mean" and others written by Bonner and Gordon are pure Turtles. Those who remember when life wasn't always so frantic will enjoy the lovely melodies of Warren Zevon's "Like the Seasons", Eric Eisner's "Too Young to be One" and the humorous opera of Rugs of Woods and Flowers. Put that together with Howard Kaylan's superb voice and the comical, rambunctious Mark Volman and you have an enjoyable album.

The Turtles haven't really turned up in many people's mind when they think of the 60's, but many of the songs are familiar when you hear them! Happy Together is my personal favorite, but in general I believe that if you're into the 60's style of music, you should at least check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of Their Best, February 21, 2005

This album is just like a greatest hits album, although there are two songs were smash hits: "Happy Together" & "She'd Rather Be With Me" but the other tracks are just great. Even a casual Turtles' fan will love it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good album, but..., April 14, 2001

...I honestly think Battle and Soup are better. While Happy Together has tons of great tracks, it's a bit fluffy, and I must be the one person on earth who doesn't care for "She'd Rather Be With Me."

The German REPERTOIRE issue of this CD has more bonus tracks (including the mono single mixes of some tunes), but the Sundazed issue sounds much better. *Sigh*
