5.0 out of 5 stars This is the way voices were meant to be heard
My dad gave me this album not long after it came out, and once I heard it I knew a capella was what I wanted to do. These guys know how to harmonize and make the listener not only feel the music, but want to be a part of it as well.

A capella is usually good but this is great! The choice of songs - especially the oldies has you singing along right away. Good exercise music, too. Never heard the cut 'This Island Earth" before, but being a sentimental environmentalist, it's become a favorite! Buy this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars a capella at its best, February 13, 1999

Everyone should have this CD in their collection...one that can be pulled out year after year and still be appreciated, unlike so much of the pop stuff these days.

Without a question, on the basis of the vocals this CD is a solid 5+.

BUT . . . . . it sounds like when they put together these incredible a capella numbers and got the singing running as tight as Ferrari that some yoyo said, "Wait, my kid just got back from Sears with this nifty little synthesizer! Why don't we add some disco sounds - that will really make this stuff sell!!"

And all I can say is, "Why?"

In my opinion most of the needed percussion could have been better done with background vocals (like on the track, "A Touch Of Your Hand"). Granted on some numbers the "synthesizer" percussion fits but often it is just gets in the way of the incredibly expressive vocal work. It's like adding tin to gold.

For example, listen to the track, "It's What They Call Magic." What does the "drum" do for this song? It's just noise. Noise that stands in the face of the rich vocals. Same with "This Island Earth" which would have sounded even better as a pure a capella number. So for stuff like this I reluctantly rate the CD a 4.

Still a great recording. I heard this first as a cassette 10 years ago and it hasn't faded with time. Best tracks are "This Island Earth", "Grown Man Cry", "Crazy In Love" - all the tracks are worth hearing over and over - four superb male vocalists flying all over ten very creative, often high energy arrangements.

I bought this on cassette when it first came out. After buy the same cassette twice more (I played them until the tape wore out on each one!) I finally bought it on CD. Infact I bought 2 CD's of this incase you can wear one out. We saw them in concert. This played at our wedding, and it played at my husbands funeral as well. I still love the clear crisp tones of there voices as they blend into a beautiful harmony.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genius for vocal blending., June 26, 2009

The Nylons have a true gift for vocal interaction. The harmonies, and tonal qualities of this record set it apart. The song selection gives lots of opportunities for sharing the lead, and it provides variety, and suits their style.

The nylons are incredible performers who do a superior job of reproducing some of the favorite songs from the past in a cappella form. If you love songs like Happy Together or Kiss Him Goodbye you will find the renditions from the Nylons to be a must!
