This item is sturdy enough for mice(you won't be having any mice escape once caught). I can't vouch for anything larger than mice. Just keep in mind this is for small critters so it's a thin metal mesh type material(flexible).
It is also Easy to bait and setup However, the major downside to this product is how the trap is laid out in the cage. You can't really get a good view from the current pictures, but the actual trigger is an isosceles trapezoid. While the shape isn't a huge deal the fact that the ends of the trigger don't even meet the sides of the cage is an issue. So basically you have a trigger that mice can literally walk around and grab the bait if not placed just right. So if you place the bait at the high point of the trigger mice can grab it without setting it off unless you use some type of sticky residue. If you put the bait too far back, then the mouse can just walk around the trigger and happily trot away with some food. If you put it in the middle it depends on house the mouse approaches the trigger. If he tries from the front(which is the end suspended in the air, then he will trigger it. If he decides to go from behind he again can get the bait without triggering the trap, unless again you use some type of sticky residue. My point is I shouldn't have to use some type of sticky gunk and hope I got the bait is in the perfect spot for the mouse to trigger the trap. A simple fix for the manufacturer would be to simply make the trigger extend the full width of the cage instead of stopping short of it and leaving two gaps on either side. As we all know mice can get through the smallest of openings. Also, there's a very easy fix for those who already have purchased this. If you simply get a piece of cardboard and cut it to the width of the cage and leave it to be about 2-3 inches long you can make a nice little ramp which is taped to the trigger end suspended in the air. By doing this you guarantee the mouse has to walk over the ramp before even getting to the bait.

If you don't want to kill the mouse in your house, BUY THIS.,

We bought the Happy Trap Sr. from here on Amazon when we were invaded by a mouse family. They had even set up house-keeping in my piano (whose nest I removed by taking out one key at a time). They were small. They looked adorable from a distance. But they are not healthy to have around; and they are messy house keepers. We went to WalMart and bought 4 of their little humane traps. They didn't work. Then we ordered the one here from Amazon, sent from Maine. It works GREAT! We've caught a mouse every night since setting the trap. The mouse messers are alive and well and out in a park far away. Thank you, AMAZON, for having Happy Traps!

I've caught 12 chipmunks already in less than a week (it would be more if I was home on weekdays to release the critters out of my ONE trap). This REALLY works - I just bait it with a nut and berry birdfeed. It is easy to use and the rodents can't get enough. We are certainly getting them moved from our house (under our concrete and inside our A/C) into the country!

I spent about an hour researching on Amazon for a live/humane mouse trap as well as another 45 minutes on Ebay. This was the result of doing research around my neighborhood after a little field mouse got trapped under my house in the process of replacing the underlining insulation.
I discovered that Tropical Smoothie Cafe uses glue traps whic do not effectively kill mice- at least until they chew through their legs, starve, or dehydrate to death first. Not to mention what an awful cry they make until they do pass! My Hubby has heard stories about the snap trap not always killing the mice, just breaking their backs so same scenerio as above. The poison bait takes hours for effect. We were told that they eat some of the bait, get thirsty and die upon drinking fluids with almost immediate death and little pain. I read that the same poison, if ingested by a dog can cause him to slowly bleed to death, only intervined by an injection of vitamin K. We had the same mouse chewing the same bait trap for two nights. I could hear her chewing on it while I was in bed so that is why I chose to look up the live trap info. I read up on all of the feedbacks and comments left by others -which thank yo everyone on here for your feedback, it really does help! After checking out all of the live traps on Amazon, I found that this one had the least problems, easy to assemble, no mouse appendages being caught/cut off, no false alarm, we caught that little girl with in the first night, the trap closed while she was in there. We think she was the only mouse in our house. After dropping her off to the nature preserve, we set up the trap again just incase she had any room mates = ) We will see what happens. Call me a hippy- well I guess that will be military hippy, but mice can feel pain and experience suffering too, I feel better about disposing them this way. No stink, no mess, no pain-but all gain = ) If you are looking for a good humane trap, HERE YOU GO !!! Good Luck!

We bought this trap specifically for chipmunks. They are cute but oh so destructive. This trap works like a charm and on the first afternoon alone we caught four chipmunks. The trap is easy to set and the trigger is set just right for a chipmunk's weight. We previously purchased another type of live trap which didn't work at all so we are thrilled with this one. Highly recommended!

B+ for design, D for materials,

The design of the trap is very good. I have caught 3 squirrels with it. However, that is about the total life expectancy for the trap (3 trappings). The cause of the short life expectancy is due to material deficiency. The trap is made from very flimsy metal resembling scrap recycled aluminum cans or soup cans.
After the 3rd trapping, the trap is beyond repair. In fact, extensive repairs were necessary after each trapping due to the squirrel trying to chew its way out and bumping into the trigger mechanism. Another very important consideration is there are too many sharp corners and edges built into the trap. Every animal was bleeding from injuries sustained while in the trap. In conclusion, even if the trap was still usable I would be afraid to use it anymore due to its potential to maim the animal. My grade for this trap would be a `B+' for design, but a `D' for manufacturing and material choice.

I have a rat infestation under my shed. They chewed through an old trash can we were using as a secondary compost bin. Unlike the compost bin we bought, this one was too thin, providing easy access for them. I have been looking for a humane way to catch them as death from poison and glue traps is a horrible way to go. I ordered this trap and have caught 6 in 3 days using only birdseed! I just ordered a second trap since there are several more I believe and I want to get rid of them as fast as possible. Unlike some other reviews I find they seem to be plenty durable. To reduce the odds of damage I check the trap fairly regularly, as I figure damage is more likely if you leave them in there for a long time. Great simple trap design. Highly recommended.
As for what to do with the rats, these are city rats and likely to carry disease so I researched online and found a design for a simple CO2 euthenasia chamber which if done properly puts them to sleep before they die from asphyxiation. The CO2 is created with vinegar and baking soda. This is considered the most humane way to kill small rodents. I eliminated them this way with good success. Just be sure to administer C02 slowly into the chamber until they are asleep before fully flooding the chamber with CO2 which kills them.

In just one night, one mouse safely captured and released to a field down the road! I am very pleased. I read lots of reviews of this product vs other humane traps and I am glad that we didn't have to mess around. We just set the food that came with the trap inside and let it do its magic. It was worth the money. Very quick shipping too. I had this order within a day or two.

We have had an infestation of chipmunks in our neighborhood. They have caused our brick sidewalk to collapse three times now and have also caused problems on our patio made of brick pavers.
We had tried other traps and they didn't work. The first day this trap arrived we had 4 of the little critters. To date, we have caught 29 of them. A neighbor was having chipmunk problems too so we lent him the trap. A squirrel got into the trap and destroyed it so we have to order another. Highly recommended. BTW we also caught a squirrel or two but we got them out before much damage was done to the trap. We use a mixture of peanut butter and bird seed for bait.

I purchased this trap a couple days ago after reading all of the A+ feedback. It is incredibly easy to use. They even send along a bit of food to get you started. In less than 8 hours I caught a field mouse and one of the chipmunks (that were my original goal with this trap.) Today pulled up in the car after 2 hours gone to find a squirrel in the trap. It chewed through the side of the metal and busted out the back way to escape. The trap is totally not usable anymore. It apparently is not sturdy enough to prevent the escape of slightly larger animal. I did contact Maine Supply Co. directly and they are sending me a replacement trap free. So, they definately stand behind their product. But, I'm left wondering how to keep the squirrels away and only catch the chipmunks that are my intended tagets?
