I stole this collection of short stories from my English teacher when I was a senior in high school. The book came West with me as I traveled cross-country to California in a 1973 Red Jeep pick-up truck, holding an exalted position at the top of the one box of books that made the trek with me.

About three years ago, I found a first edition through Amazon and sent it to my English teacher with a note - admitting the theft and asking if the enclosed copy would make amends.

But why had I stolen the book in the first place? Because it contained maybe three of the best short stories I had ever read - maybe more.

Uncle Jimbo's Marbles is the definitive story about the machinations of summer camp that will strike a sympathetic chord in anyone who has ever spent 8 weeks in Maine or Vermont or upper New York state or Wisconsin or the UP, etc, calling counselors "Uncle this and Uncle that".

Happy New Year, Herbie is an incredibly complex story of marrieage and friendship, with deep insights into the human psyche.

As I Lay Dying further defines the territory of rebellious youth culture that Evan Hunter made famous in BLACKBOARD JUNGLE...

The author's use of language, economy of style and ability to create vivid imagery is a strong template for all aspiring short story writers...
