4.0 out of 5 stars Serj Tankian - Harakiri July 10, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Harakiri is the third canonical full-length studio album by System Of A Down front-man Serj Tankian as a solo artist (he has released EPs, live output and a collaborative album with Arto Tunçboyac'yan as well however).

It was released in the summer of 2012, lasts around 45 minutes and was self-produced by Tankian. The album was written, in an almost Trent Rezonor-like move, by painstakingly assembling new songs out of thousands of samples from his previous albums on an iPad.

Some people will hate this album. If you've always disliked Serj's personal politics (or agreed with them but wished he'd keep them out of the music) then lyrics about Occupy Wall Street and corporate corruption are going to be a sore spot. If you seriously disliked some of the musical moves Serj made with his previous album there are parts of that sound still on here, and if you come from a more metal background there is relatively little metal on this album at all. Furthermore, If you've ever said that some artist or other has disappeared up their own backside or became too pretentious, then this is an album that you may want to approach with caution so as to avoid disappointment.

If you have heard the album's first single 'Figure It Out' and were very excited by its musical direction, with the chugging and double-kicks, then you may be disappointed to know that it is actually a little out of place on the album, and that there are really only two more tracks that are in any way similar, those being the album's final two tracks. You get some punky, almost Crossover Thrash sections scattered throughout those three tracks, although obviously through the filter of Serj's solo career style.

Elsewhere, stylistically, the album as a whole is a bit of a mixed bag.

I applaud his moves in this work! He maintains a bold commitment to making an art of political expression while making a necessary mockery of some of the more ridiculous distractions in mainstream life. He is not afraid to shake anyone awake who is falling in love with the world we are "presented." And anyone who follows Serj to his solo works should (by now) expect his bold, quirky expressions of popular culture and politics that can be profound, offensive, and hilarious all at once. The man is not afraid to express himself, and he does it for a cause... you cannot beat that... in my opinion... He is refreshingly honest. "Reality TV" is a needed slap in the face if anyone is dumbed down.

Rhythmically I appreciate how he takes the familiarity of his voice and contrasts/weaves it around some very interesting audio textures... for example in "Ching Chime" you find an almost addictive syncopation. If you are a real listener you can hear some great texture in these songs. He uses some interesting electronic work in there that I really did not expect, but he pulls it off.

You can tell Serj enjoys trying new things, you can hear it on this album and you can see it in his other projects. If you have watched his work over the years it is a cool way to see someone exploring their own creativity.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return to Form July 26, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I absolutely LOVED 'Elect the Dead' & 'Elect the Dead Symphony'. I wasn't feeling 'Imperfect Harmonies'. That being said, I'm happy to say that 'Harakiri' is a welcome return to form for Serj Tankian. The music is heavier that 'Imperfect Harmonies', and a bit closer to 'Elect the Dead', or even some System, while still managing to sound unique in its own right.

Bottom Line: If you like Serj, buy it. If you like System, buy it. Not as good as 'Elect the Dead', in my opinion; but far better than 'Imperfect Harmonies'.

this is a much slower album, and just does not have the feeling that the earlier releases have. listen to the previews and decide for yourself if its a must have. I just snagged it on sale, and for that price its decent. full price not so much

3.0 out of 5 stars SOME GREAT SONGS!!!!!! April 13, 2013
Format:Audio CD
There's some great songs on HARAKIRI like OCCUPIED TEARS, FIGURE IT OUT and WEAVE ON....but there's A LOT of slow tunes, and while Serj still reminds the singer of SYSTEM OF A DOWN, he really change his style here....HARAKIRI is way way better than the previous IMPERFECT HARMONIES, but sucks if compared to the SYSTEM OF A DOWN albums or even Serj's first good album ELECT THE DEAD....

5.0 out of 5 stars Serj is a wonderful man. April 9, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
This song has a punk-ish feel to it. It's more rock oriented than Imperfect Harmonies, and has a different vibe than Elect the Dead. This is more of something you can get passionate about while singing and such. Magnificent, as always. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and wonderful April 7, 2013

I was mixed between 4 stars and five stars. I wish there was a 4.5 on Amazon

The music on this album simply rocks. All of the fast songs have that awesome, driving rock pulse. The slower songs tend to be intricate and melodic. Serj's vocal style was always unique, and he uses it well in this album

I wasn't a fan of System of a Down, though now I'm curious how the rest of their albums sound compared to what was on the radio

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD March 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This CD Surpassed my expectation by far, am always leary of buying a "lead singer" from a broken up band, soad. But it is great, my 14 year old daughter loves it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.
I love Serj Tankian, but he isn't for everyone. He has a unique sound to his voice, I can't deny that some times it sounds a little strange. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Serj hits his stride
Serj's third solo album finally delivers what we all knew he could: high-energy, awesome music. This is less euro-poppy than his earlier albums, and the lyrics get a bit preachy,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, reminiscent of System of a Down
Those missing the days of System of a Down will love this. More edgy than previous Serj albums, but not as hard as SoaD. Very poetic, as expected. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
After the disappointment that was Imperfect Harmonies, I'm glad the new Serj album delivers, as one has learned to expect from such an outstanding musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars Closest to SOAD Serj or Scars can come.
This album is the best Serj Tankian album to date. It's the closest to SOAD we can get. Every track is great, but I especially love Occupied Tears. It's amazing. Hope this helps. Read more
