I had some basic problems with this book that all centered around the hero.

In the beginning, I was given to believe that the hero, sent to pass a basic trial to prove his worth as a hunter, was basically inept, falling out of a tree and breaking his hunting bow, the worst thing that could befall a budding hunter apparently. Not a big deal, but later in the book we learn that the hero has mad skills in this department. It made me wonder if the opening of the book had been written at some much earlier time when the plot was more formative.

The general demeanor of the hero himself was, as others have pointed out, far from heroic. Throughout the book people are telling him that he has some great power or another, to which he staunchly replies time and again 'no I don't', after which the characters have to show him evidence to the contrary. He is never happy, and he completely fails to form any sort of relationship with his travelling companion, whom it turns out he has feelings for. Whenever it looks like there might be a thaw in that particular department, hero gets all sullen and angsty for reasons only an author could explain.

I can't really continue with this series because I'm not interested in reading about such a childish character. I enjoyed many of the other characters quite a bit, but the hero is a deal breaker.

I am rating this book as fairly as I can. I absolutely support the budding authors and their works that I find on Amazon for Kindle books. I buy a goodly number of them. I love to read and I truly love to read fantasy. I purchased this particular book due to it's high ratings given by other readers. Most people who read these books, I have found, understand that these are not professionally edited books and most are new works by neophyte authors so I tend to trust the majority and how they rate the books. I am rating this a four star because, for what it is, it is good. A good story, good characters, nice tidy plots...but it should be listed as young adult, if not children's book. It is written in the style of a fairy tale, and while I have no objections to fairy tales, they certainly serve a purpose in all societies, I feel misled if not betrayed by the genre purported to be this book's niche. It is certainly not written for anyone over the age of twelve (I may be stretching it) in my opinion. The author is worthy, the story is worthy, the category is not.

I really enjoyed this read. The overall story is not really something that hasnt been done before, but the author adds some nice little touches of her own that i enjoyed the ride. The part that i really liked about the book though was the characters especially and supporting ones. Kael is a good enough main character, i found it easy to be sympathetic towards him at the start. then i thought he kind of petered out a bit in the middle before picking back up again. The supporting cast was fun though. They each had their own personalities and quirks which i found refreshing. Overall i found this to be a good book and am looking forward to book 2.

To the author, i hope to see more of the Uncle. While not overly important i found the parts he was in to be quite enjoyable.

...for a really entertaining and inventive first work. Congratulations to the author. My only problem with the book is the protagonists situation at the beginning of the story (outsider in the community-harassed by bullies-"runt of the litter"-unknown parents)- too much cliche. But after this the story really takes flight and gives the reader a run for it's money. I'm looking forward to further books by this author.

Excellent young adult fantasy, gripping magic, emmersive story line, honest romance and the constant under-currents of clever humour will have others asking you, "what are you laughing about?" Of course, you will shush them, because you are reading and have no time or desire to explain...MUST HAVE SEQUEL NOW

I picked up this book on a whim and was thrilled with it. The story moves along at a good pace and there is always something around the corner. The romantic part of the plot creates tension and that part of the book may drag a bit for some due to the constant self questioning of the protagonist.

The supporting characters are, for the most part, fairly well developed and the action flows well.

I will definitely buy the sequel!!

As an English teacher, I am constantly looking for books to share with my students. This book, Harbinger, is one of those books I would love to bring into the classroom. Not only is it superbly done, it is a book everyone can relate to. That struggle for acceptance, that love, that feeling of awkwardness... All addressed in a fun, adventurous story that is packed with real characters, real emotions, and real struggles. The fact that it is a fantasy novel (dragons, castles, the like) just sweetens the package.

I encourage everyone to read this novel. You will fall in love. I can't wait for the sequel!

This book captured something to me that was missing from aloy of recent fantasy novels, and that is a dynamic romance. Meaning the Hero and Heroine don'y just magically fall in love with one another, or never have any problems, but their love and feelings grow as the book progresses. You see as the characters make their mistakes and how their pay for them, and when their feelings grow we can understand them better as living beings not just characters in a book. I liked this story immensely so that if there were even faults I didn't see them.

Don't usually take the time to review a book, but had to make an exception with this one... This is an amazing book from start to finish. The humor and wit make this book stand out. It deserves a second read and can't wait to get into the next installment.
