5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Hide Your Light!, December 21, 2005
This review is from: The Harbor Light (Hardcover)
Kids face a variety of challenges growing up in today's complex world. Media role models and pressure from friends to "fit in" seem to come at an ever earlier age. As parents, we are challenged to equip our children with the tools to stand up for the things they believe in and to make right choices.

In his new book The Harbor Light (Kregel Kidzone, January 2006, hardcover, 32 pages) author and animator Eric Walls introduces a loveable new character, Lighthouse. Like today's average kid, Lighthouse wants to "fit in", to have friends, and to be cool. But he also carries some pretty major responsibilities: it is his job to shine his light, day and night, as a safe haven for all to see.

Lighthouse knows his duties, but faces isolation, temptation, and peer pressure from others. He wants friends and popularity, but he may have to hurt others or turn his back on his duties to attain this. As the story unfolds, we see Lighthouse's choices, and their results, in an exciting story that ends up teaching us a big lesson.

Kids of any age will enjoy this lively new character and will benefit from the important life lessons presented. We each possess a "light" within, and a responsibility to share that light with those around us. If we hide our light, we hurt ourselves and others. By teaching our children to recognize and to share their light, we pave the way for their happiness and ultimately for helping them to be the best people they can be. With a little help from Lighthouse and The Harbor Light, life's challenges and temptations may seem just a little easier to understand and navigate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific for Kids - Great for All Ages!!, March 10, 2006
This review is from: The Harbor Light (Hardcover)
I initially bought The Harbor Light for my children and my grandchildren. They listened intently to the message of the words, watched in amazement as the illustration pages were turned, and responded with valuable life lessons from the content. What's even more exciting is that I'm over fifty and I found the story applicable to my life and the illustrations delightfully inspirational. I was then thrilled when my parents found joy in the book as well. Even the elderly who are dealing with lonliness and other challenges can find encouragement from this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story for the young and old!, November 27, 2010
This review is from: The Harbor Light (Hardcover)
My mother bought this book for me and my children. It was written by the son of my 6th grade teacher and she thought it was unique and special to see his published work. The book ended up being much more than that - it has been a story I read to my kids over and over. I myself walk away with a reminder to always let my light shine - thanks Eric!

An entertaining story with a moral that is relatable for children. Why should a child be responsible and dependable, when life sends so many opportunities to just have fun!? Story is easily understood and the illustrations bring the characters to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Harbor Light - Inspirational Illumination!, March 23, 2006
This review is from: The Harbor Light (Hardcover)
First- the artwork is very effective in creating an appealing and endearing (flawed)hero.Second - the story is meaty and engaging as Lighthouse struggles with issues of conscience, peer pressure and selfishness - to emerge victorious. It is a fresh way to begin the dialog with children of all ages over these and other issues...do we listen to the wise counsel of our elders, of our heavenly father? Or do we find out the disasterous consequences of bad choices? It's a timeless story presented in a meaningful, thoughtful - and fun way. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Literature and Illustrations with an Uplifting Message, March 13, 2006

This review is from: The Harbor Light (Hardcover)
As a retired elementary principal, English teacher, mother, and grandmother, I found The Harbor Light to be an encouraging story for children. The story addresses the problems of peer pressure, loneliness, and lack of purpose and conviction.

It is beautifully illustrated and written, challenging children and adults alike to trust and find God's purpose in their lives, and to live that life wholeheartedly so the Lighthouse keeper will one day say, "Well Done."

The Harbor Light would be an ideal gift for a child or adult who is seeking or needs encouragement.
