I have used the Harbrace College Handbook for 31 years. My first was the 5th Edition, which I keep on the top in one of my desk drawers. I used it throughout college. I bought this edition for my father, who gave me the first one, and seems to have lost his own copy (he's 86!). This edition is much thicker than the 5th one -- these books are not exactly "reading material," but a reference guide; so I haven't read it from cover to cover. <gg> This book comes with a computer CD to install the entire book on your computer.

I have been using it for years, also - and when I lose it, I feel as though I've lost my right arm! (Oh, OK, well maybe as though I've lost my purse or something!) In fact, this paragraph is probably filled with grammatical and style errors because I can't find my Harcourt Brace (that's what it used to be called)! :- )

Harbrace College Handbook was purchased for my college freshman. It fills his needs for his full college schedule and was a great buy for the money!

The Harbrace Handbook was required in my first college English course since errors could simply by keyed to the relevant explanation in the handbook. It was a very workable solution for student and teacher since the handbook could go into details in a way the teacher couldn't, for lack of time. After college, as the handbook was revised, I purchased subsequent editions because, knowing the way the book was organized, it was easy to go right to the answer when I had a question, or a doubt. The spelling tips in Section 18 reassured me on more than one occasion. Along with the handbook, I also value Eric Partridge's "You Hava a Point There", which explains punctuation intuitively as a means for achieving clear, unambiguous expression, and demystifies any presumption that punctuation can only be done one way-- removing some of the worry over being revealed a hopeless mistake of evolution!

Excellent reference if it is necessary to constantly bibliograph infomation off the internet and other electronic sources
