Easy To Love,

Haystak continues his tradition of hard-hitting, honest, distinctly southern, consistently dope albums with his most recent release: Hard 2 Love. However, he changes quite a few things this time around. First and most noticable (to me, anyway) is the dismissal of Sonny P from production. While I believe Sonny P to be one of the most under-rated producers in hip-hop, Stak Mak found capable replacements in his more recent collaborators the Big Boyz Beatz crew, who produce every cut on this album. Still utilizing live instrumentation as well as keyboards (the same southern fried mix that Sonny P has successfully utilized for a decade now), Stak's producers deliver the necessary variations for his adaptable flow. From "The White Boy's Back" to "I Do It For You" Big Boyz land whatever type of beat Stak needs to express his emotions. Granted, Sonny's distinct sound is missed on tracks like "Blastville" where Big Boyz deliver a solid, if uninspired, track that I have to believe Sonny could've knocked out the park if given the chance. Also, this record is put out by Merge Entertainment, not Street Flavor (Sonny's record lable and the home to all of the other Haystak albums). Finally, the change I didn't really notice until it was pointed out to me by a friend, this album contains NO EXPLICIT LYRICS. No censorship, no scratching, simply Stak providing hard songs and soft odes without the need of profanity. This artistic risk is a testament to the kind of MC that Haystak is. I know that Haystak's next album "Cracks The Safe" has explicit lyrics (and comes out a week after this album! Dang!) so this is probably an attempt to complete the albums concept (this is mostly a positive if a bit rough album, Haystak's true follow up "Easy To Hate" should be a very dark album). But what else do you really need to know? This isn't "From Start To Finish" (certified southern classic, in my opinion) but it IS a great, fresh record from one of the game's most consistent and daring talents. Give Stak Mak a chance and give this record a spin. You'll be glad you did.

This album here is my least favorite Stak album and it has nothing to do with the fact that it's not an explicit album. It's the only hip hop album I can think of in this day and time that is not explicit which is original and would make it hard for anyone to make a album like this. So for that my hat goes off 2 Stak. But to me this was not a good album. Only tracks I like are Plottin On A Bakery, R.I.P Pimp C which from what I've heard inculding all kinds of rappers outta Texas this is the best dedication to Pimp C period. And B.O.S.S. is a damn good track! The beat the lyrics just hard as hell with the elctric guitar 1 of my favorite Stak songs of all time. Almost want to give this album 3 stars cause of this track alone.
