5.0 out of 5 stars So good, it was a one sitting read!!!!, March 20, 2006
By
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
I was unfamiliar with Guy Jacobs work as this was the first book I read that he wrote. After stumbling across it on Amazon I decided to give it a read. All I can say is life changing! Jacobs is definitely a talent and that rare author who can create a tale so vivid and true that it is frighteningly good. His tales of love and life in general really hit home with the reader. I would definitely recommend this book to not only single males like myself but anyone who is searching for love and the meaning of life. Jacobs just became my favorite author. I only hope that he publishes more books in the future and does not disappear.

5.0 out of 5 stars a sad singles story, February 14, 2007
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
This novel, while itself unique, reminds me of a variety of other books I've read in the past. How's that for starting off a review with words that don't make sense. "Hard-Boiled Men" has a Sex in the City/Bukowski/more simple version of Henry Miller-esque-ness to it. (Yes, I'm creating my own words now, leave me alone.)

The story is about Ben Wise, a recently singled man in lonely New York City. Ben has never truly gotten over his last girlfriend, and though he does everything he knows he should, moving on just doesn't come easy for him.

If you're easily offended by perverse sexual discussions, I would recommend you not pick up this book. There is an honesty and frankness similar to that written by Henry Miller throughout this novel..the author holds nothing back and leaves little up to the readers imagination when it comes to the characters' sexual encounters.

Aside from being humorous and perverse, the undertones are sad. Ben truly is an unhappy guy..through every one night stand and blind date, the reader knows there is more to Ben Wise, and wants almost as desperately as he does for him to find happiness.

Give it a read..its a good one.

Hard-Boiled Men was a wonderful read. I could not stop laughing throughout the entire read. Jacobs did a great job is depicting single life in NYC. This is a must read for anyone who has ever gone through a breakup. Most importantly, this book will make you think long after you finish reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty And True To Life, September 9, 2006
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
Guy Jacob's character Ben Wise is completely intoxicating, seductive, confused, true to life, addictive, and a character to be identified with. Jacobs is truly a talented writer effortlessly able to keep you riveted and enthralled from cover to cover. This novel is a breath of fresh air to the usual single/dating life account cleverly laced with a healthy dose of humor. Nothing about this novel is ordinary from the characters to the racey love scenes. You will put it down feeling completely entertained and satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, April 17, 2006
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
I really enjoyed Hard Boiled Men. This is a great story about single life in New York City. While this book is written from the perspective of a single man, I think that women could also relate to the story line. Anyone who ever dealt with a harsh breakup or with the emptiness of dating will like this novel. I read the entire book in less than 48 hours and already recommended it to several of my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars :-) wow!!, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
"There are only 3 things that men can do for the sake Of Women.. Love them suffer for them or make literature out of them.."
-Lawrence Darrel
indeed this writer definitely obtain great success performing those 3 actions and perhaps redefined them in a way that can really make you dazed, that you don't know whether to hit him or kiss him.
This book is far from being poetic and as well very far from becoming plain meaning. when you will move forward along this erosive, exciting and surprising story, one of the many things you would feel is, that this writer have
a unique capability of portraying the terms: LOVE, LIFE, SEX, HEARTBREAK
MAN, WOMEN... and actually everything in between (and that all happens in the city of New York) in such way that will keep you with a wide open smile upon your face till about the end. Hard Boiled Man is a strong and at the same time a frail story about a man that is trying to figure out what the #&# .. Life is all about. And He's Doing a Pretty Good Job.A kind of book that you'll read definitely more then once..

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, January 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this novel. It was funny, thought provoking and intelligent. This is basically an academic novel that deals with university life, intercultural dating and lots of sexuality. Guy Jacobs has a great sense of humor and does not appear to take himself too seriously. He has much respect for the reader and is clearly influenced by the writings of Charles Bukowski.

I heard about the novel from a friend who recommended it to me. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars One More Man!, April 25, 2007
This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
I thorougly enjoyed Guy Jacobs book HARD-BOILED MEN. It was like revisiting all the men I had interviewed and then some. Guy holds back on nothing. I couldn't help but cheer the hero on...although there were times when I wanted to pop him in the nose!
A fun read...especially for the ladies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Sad, Truthfull, Awasome, March 23, 2007

This review is from: Hard-Boiled Men (Paperback)
When you open up this novel, you are immediately drawn in. This book is raw, hilarious and best of all truthful and straightforward. Despite the fact that this is an easy quick funny read, this book also makes you think about it long after you are done reading it. I loved the main character of Ben Wise who sort of reminded me of a mix of Holden Caulfield from the Catcher in the Rye and of Grady Tripp from the Wonder Boys. Hard-Boiled Men is a great novel, pick it up.
