If you like to make brimmed hats, this book is great!,

This book will change your attitude about crocheting and what you can do with it. You will learn how to crochet beautiful brimmed hats, baskets, and luggage. Definitely NOT your afghan, granny square vests, and lace shawl kind of crocheting.

Mr Dittrick has written a book on how to make "hard" crochet. THis isn't crochet you need a special hook for or special yarn - this is crochet for such things as Stetson hats, baskets and hard brimmed hats. Mr Dittrick shows how to modify an already existing hook to help you to create hard crochet. The instructions are clear and helpful.
If you're looking for a new afghan or poncho to make, this is not the book for you. But if you're interested in turning out something unexpected with crochet, this is definitely the book for you.

This is an interesting book which details how to make stiff crocheted items using an ordinary hook (with modified handle) and rug yarn of a particular materials content. I'm not sure how available the yarn is these days, but it seems reasonable that you could still find a suitable one for these projects.
The book has detailed instructions on how to modify a regular crochet hook handle to accomplish the tension (gauge) necessary to work crochet this tightly. I think this would be great even for those who want to do regular crochet but have difficulty with holding small handles. Very easy and doable. The projects aren't all step-by-step because of the variables, but the instructions are very thorough to accomplish both the projects shown and make your own variations as you learn how to work in this style. See my uploaded images for some of the projects of the book. If you are interested in the cowboy hats or pith helmets, I'd say definitely get this book. I hope to one day make one of the briefcases. Very awesome! Worthy lessons to keep in your crochet library.

Oldie but a goodie,

This book predates the tapestry crochet books and is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the techniques required to create crochet objects that hold there shape. The author talks through the processes he went through to formulate the patterns, enabling the reader to take a similar journey. The patterns are excellent and easy to follow. Because of its age the materials list is out of date, but the author goes into the composition of the materials he used. Similar products can be found from this discussion
