David LaMotte's music is just incredible. I've experienced it live several times -- which is the best, of course. But this album continues to take my breath away. Such a wondrous variety of moods expressed, from the pensive and introspective Dark and Deep to the daily life reality of Hard Earned Smile and the silly self-reflection of Stupid in Love (one of the most unique and enjoyable love songs of all time -- in my humble opinion!). I can lose myself in LaMotte's music in general, but this disk really lets me lose myself in the music while always recogizing myself in the words. Kudos, David!

David's got some great music here. Of course, it's not quite the same as his concerts, but you just have to experience the rambling firsthand! Even so, his songs are full of heart and soul, and he seems to find a way to express every emotion through music -- even anger and hurt through upbeat song. This is a great CD, and it's highly recommended!

This CD is one of my absolute favorites. David has some major insights into life and listening to this CD makes me happy... Plus, David is a totally nice and awsome guy.

A wonderful experience for anyone who has ever loved the mountains (and acoustic/folksy music). LaMotte's range in both content and style is truly impressive, making "Hard Earned Smile" his most mature and touching work to date. "Butler Street" is amazing for it's sincerity, while "Stupid in Love" will make you want to grab a partner and boogy! There is truly something for every acoustic guitar lover on this CD.

This man is amazing, and if there's one album of his you can't live without, it would be this one!

David LaMotte has done it again with Hard Earned Smile! His music touches the soul and speaks both to the serious side of you and tickles the funny bone. Anyone not familiar with the Montreat, NC singer should take the plunge and order this or any of this other CD's. I just got back from a David LaMotte concert and remeber how much I enjoys his music.

I first saw him play in Montreat, NC, his stomping ground, and have been hooked ever since. His music hits a folk chord that is niether corny or overdramatic. LaMotte writes about his own experience in a way that makes it possible for others to relate and expand upon it. His music can stir emotion or relax those who have problems deep at heart. "Hard Earned Smile," a particular favorite, not only gives hope, but reassures. His music is versitile enough to interpret in an individual way, while, on the surface, just plain sounds good.
