Editorial Reviews

When most people look at Florence Farley, they see a pretty teenager. But when Milly Farley looks at her daughter she sees something else: a tennis prodigy who could be Milly's ticket to money and fame. Released in 1951, Hard, Fast and Beautiful foresaw our modern era of big-time women's sports - and of driven parents who would stop at nothing to "help" their daughters grab the golden ring.
Sally Forrest plays Florence, who finds athletic success but not happiness. Claire Trevor seethes with barely concealed malice and greed as Milly. And behind the camera is movie star Ida Lupino, guiding one of a series of low-budget, big-concept films that established her as a rarity in mid-century Hollywood: a successful and stylish female director.

I saw this film many years ago and never forgot it. It's still relevent today with the story being that of a manipulative mother trying to control her talented daughter. Love Claire Trevor!

Claire Trevor only wants one thing: that her daughter (Sally Forrest) becomes a champion tennis star. In their climb to the top, they alienate her husband, her daughter's boyfriend, and just about everyone else. The soap suds run heavy here without some key conflict to keep interest. What if the daughter committed some scandal involving the gifts her mother got that would revoke her amatuer status so she would lose a trophy? The tennis scenes are well played out, as well as Kenneth Patterson's part as Claire's weak-hearted husband. He was best known as Dana Wynter's father in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In the end Claire is lonely and miserable from her greed and control over her daughter. All try their best to save a dull script.
