5.0 out of 5 stars Hard To Find? Some Were Impossible!, July 22, 2000
This review is from: Hard To Find 45s On CD, Volume 5: 60's Pop Classics (Audio CD)
I am a huge fan of Sixties music. For more than 20 years I have been making my own taped compilations from my 6,000-plus record collection. When I bought the book "Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits," I began making such tapes as "The Top 50 Songs of Lennon-McCartney," "The Top 40 Songs of the Beach Boys," "The Top 100 Songs of the Sixties," but when I started doing individual years ("The Top 100 songs of 1961," etc.) I would hit a snag. Some songs were out of print, and had been for years. Usually I would end up buying the 45--if I could find it. One of the singles I bought--the extremely hard to find "Little Ole Man" by comedian Bill Cosby--is now available on this terrific 20-track CD; most of them for the first time and many of them appear in stereo.

Here's what you get (including peak chart position and year of issue):

1. "I Got You Babe" Sonny & Cher #1, 1965 (stereo) 2. "Little Ole Man" Bill Cosby #4, 1967 (stereo) 3. "Deep Purple" Nino Tempo & April Stevens #1, 1963 (stereo) 4. "Angel on My Shoulder" Shelby Flint #22, 1960 (mono) 5. "Johnny Get Angry" Joanie Sommers #7, 1962 (stereo) 6. "Apple Blossom Time" Tab Hunter #31, 1959 (stereo) 7. "White Silver Sands" Don Rondo #7, 1957 (mono) 8. "Ebony Eyes" Everly Brothers #8, 1961 (stereo) 9. "Let's Think About Living" Bob Luman #7, 1960 (stereo) 10. "Al Di La" Emilio Pericoli #6, 1962 (mono) 11. "A Lover's Concerto" The Toys #2, 1965 (mono) 12. "Don't Say Nothin' Bad" The Cookies #7, 1963 (mono) 13. "B-A-B-Y" Carla Thomas #14, 1966 (stereo) 14. "Take a Letter Maria" R.B. Greaves #2, 1969 (stereo) 15. "Next Plane to London" The Rose Garden #17, 1967 (stereo) 16. "Batman Theme" The Marketts #17, 1966 (stereo) 17. "Sixteen Reasons" Connie Stevens #3, 1960 (stereo) 18. "One Boy" Joanie Sommers #54, 1960 (stereo) 19. "Looking for an Echo" Kenny Vance (did not chart) (stereo) 20. "Turn Around, Look at Me" The Vogues #7, 1968 (stereo)

With several of these songs the title of this CD might more correctly be Impossible To Find 45s on CD. (However, a few, like "I Got You Babe," "Ebony Eyes," "A Lover's Concerto," "Turn Around, Look at Me," are not too difficult to find elsewhere.) At any rate, Eric Records has used the best source tapes available to make available on CD some terrific lost gems. For the price of the four 45rpm singles on this CD I bought, I could have paid for this CD. This is a welcome addition to any Sixties collection RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD from a small label, June 3, 2001
This review is from: Hard To Find 45s On CD, Volume 5: 60's Pop Classics (Audio CD)
Eric records previously known for its high quality reissues of early rock 'n' roll on 45's finally has made the jump to the digital format. Although their catalog is small and timing is erratic, their stuff is worth the wait. This piece is one of a series of CD's featuring 50's and 60's pop. While some of the tracks on this CD are fairly well covered other places, there are a number of gems here that certainly justify the "Hard to find..." title such as "Little Ole Man", "Angel On My Shoulder", "Al Di La", "Let's Think About Lovin'" among others.

All but five tracks appear in true stereo (including "Deep Purple" which is not easily found in stereo elsewhere). The sound quality is excellent overall considering the obscurity of some of these tracks. A few are a bit hissy but this is preferable to the practice of some reissues using noise supression to the point of making the music flat and lifeless.

Top-of-the-line product here that rivals and indeed surpasses much of what the major label conglomerates are doing in the reissue market. You won't find this stuff any better elsewhere at this point in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific sixties compilation, June 19, 2000

This review is from: Hard To Find 45s On CD, Volume 5: 60's Pop Classics (Audio CD)
A great 20 track pop and soft rock compilation. Includes a hard to find Top 10 hit by Bill Cosby, "Little Ole' Man," his remake of the Stevie Wonder chestnut "Uptight." You get awesome sound quality throughout, as expected from Eric Records. Tracks include early sixties cuts like "Let's Think About Living" by Bob Luman and "Deep Purple" by Nino Tempo and April Stevens. Artists include such oldies radio staples as the Everly Brothers, Sonny & Cher, the Vogues, the Cookies, the Toys, plus some of the artists you just do not hear anywhere these days (Don Rondo, Joanie Sommers, Tab Hunter, Shelby Flint, Rose Garden, Connie Stevens, the Marketts). Plenty of stereo versions including some first-time ever on CD. Highly recommend all of the first four of this series also. Collectors enjoy!
