From Publishers Weekly

Rune, the shrewd and spunky heroine of Manhattan Is My Beat , returns with a new job as a camerawoman for a local TV news station, but she still believes in magic and lives by her own rules. Rune thinks that Randy Boggs, convicted killer of network news head Lance Hopper, is innocent, and she persuades network dragon lady Piper Sutton, the country's top news anchor, to let her investigate and produce a segment on the murder. Endearing, with lots of moxie but no experience, Rune learns the hard way as she blunders through the world of big-time investigative reporting, making mistakes and trusting the wrong people. She also has to act as a mother to her flaky friend Claire's three-year-old, Ophelia, when Claire runs off to Boston in search of a better life. Deaver's background as a journalist helps him to vivify the competitive, even back-stabbing caste system of network news and to successfully depict the tedium as well as the excitement a reporter experiences when breaking a major story. He writes with clarity, compassion and intelligence, and with a decidedly human and contemporary slant.

From Library Journal

After viewing a video of a convicted murderer, houseboat dwelling Rune ( Death of a Blue Movie Star , Bantam, 1990) decides the man is innocent; she then convinces her employer, Network News, to sponsor her investigation. Why Rune believes what she does remains inexplicable, which necessitates a great deal of persuasion on her (and the author's) part. Ultimately, Rune finds herself mixed up with the convict, her bosses, and a cute three-year-old. Despite its extended exposition, this tale of a news scoop gone wrong should appeal to fans.

More About the Author

Jeffery Deaver was born outside of Chicago in 1950. His father was an advertising copywriter and his mother was a homemaker. He has one younger sister who writes novels for teenagers ' Julie Reece Deaver.

Deaver wrote his first book ' which consisted of two entire chapters ' when he was eleven, and he's been writing ever since. An award-winning poet and journalist, he has also written and performed his own songs around the country. After receiving a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri, Deaver worked as a magazine writer, then, to gain the background needed to become a legal correspondent for The New York Times or Wall Street Journal, he enrolled at Fordham Law School. After graduation he decided to practice law for a time and worked for several years as an attorney for a large Wall Street firm. It was during his long commute to and from the office that he began writing the type of fiction he enjoyed reading: suspense novels. In 1990 he started to write full time.

The author of twenty-two novels, Deaver has been nominated for six Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America, an Anthony award, a Gumshoe Award, and is a three-time recipient of the Ellery Queen Reader's Award for Best Short Story of the Year. In 2001, he won the W.H. Smith Thumping Good Read Award for his Lincoln Rhyme novel The Empty Chair. In 2004, he was awarded the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain's Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award for Garden Of Beasts and the Short Story Dagger for "The Weekender." Translated into 35 languages, his novels have appeared on a number of bestseller lists around the world, including the New York Times, the London Times and the Los Angeles Times. The Bone Collector was a feature release from Universal Pictures, starring Denzel Washington as Lincoln Rhyme. A Maiden's Grave was made into an HBO film retitled Dead Silence, starring James Garner and Marlee Matlin.

Jeff has also released two collections of his short stories, called Twisted and More Twisted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good fun, March 17, 2001

One of the bonuses of Deaver's current success is that some of his previously out-of-print books have been put back in print and are now accessible to a wider audience. I thought that "Hard News" was very entertaining, even though I don't find Deaver's earlier work as good as his more recent, nor his Rune series as good as Lincoln Rhyme. Deaver has depicted Rune expertly, making her personality so vividly clear that her ditzy behaviour actually grates as it would in real life (the restaurant scene is particularly memorable).

Rune's adventures are always fun; Deaver seems to let himself go more and throws out some immensely amusing one-liners that do not seem to appear as often in the more sober Lincoln Rhyme series. Several had me chuckling out loud. He also manages to throw in his signature snippy/school-marmy grammar lesson, this time quite early on in the book. And as with all his works, you can't guess the ending unless you throw in at least three major surprises/plot changes -- a device still fun even after reading nearly ten of his books.

All in all, good fun reading for a plane or train trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire From the Gods, June 7, 2002
Rune is simply wonderful. I love her to pieces. She's quirky, fun, naive in childlike way, and just a wonderfully likeable character.

The Rune books are not the deepest books you will find. Nor are they the most exciting and thrilling. (Although they are quite.) But, they are quite atmospheric tales of New York and complex crime.

They are quirky, immense fun to read, and light hearted. Don't take them too seriously (this is what most people do with their reading...they take it far too seriously. Which spoils what would otherwise be enjoyable fiction.) and you will really relish them.

The plots are complex, the twists completely unguessable. (As is the norm with Deaver.) He is currently my favourite writer, and these little gems from the past only further convince me of the fact that he is probably the best storyteller i have come across in a very long time. Great characters, great plot, stunning writing. (I adore his style.)

If you like quirky, fun, lighthearted books with a tense edge, his Rune series is definitely for you. (I hope he ressurects her in the near future for a fourth novel.)

3.0 out of 5 stars EARLY DEAVER, January 20, 2001

Hard News" again features the delightful, one-of-a-kind Rune who first appeared in "Manhattan is My Beat." As in all the Deaver books, this one has good pace. The dialogue is crisp, frequently funny and dramatic.

What was needed was a good editor. The last 20 pages should have been the first to go. What was a fairly good mystery turned ludicrous. There are at least four characters who could/should have been eliminated. Take your pick. (Claire, child, preppie young man and Maisel are mine).

If you are a die-hard Deaver fan (as I am), read "Hard News" as a curiosity to see how the writer evolved. For all others, I'd recommend it for those who like an unusual protagonist (Rune). Grade C
