Editorial Reviews

"Recommended . . . in all social studies programs in high schools and colleges." -- Kliatt

From the Back Cover

Since Hard Road to Freedom was released in February 2001, it has garnered universal acclaim. Not only has it been lauded by publications such as The New York Times and Kirkus Reviews, it has also proven invaluable for classroom use. Many courses on African American or American history span two semesters, and Rutgers University Press is pleased to announce the availability of this book in two separate volumes-one for each semester. Because the Civil War is often covered in both semesters, this chapter is repeated in both volumes.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Christopher R. Kerr on January 16, 2009
Format: Paperback
I read a lot of late 19th century literature and this one volume history of the post-Civil War African American experience is a wonderfully accessible and concise review of this period.
