5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Listening Delight, September 13, 2007
This review is from: Hard to Say Goodbye: Very Best of Toots Thielemans (Audio CD)
"I can say without hesitation that Toots is one of the greatest musicians of our time. On his instrument he ranks with the best that jazz has ever produced. He goes for the heart and makes you cry. We have worked together more times than I can count and he always keeps me coming back for more." ~ Quincy Jones ~

Wrap yourself in a beautiful mood as you listen to this CD, "The Very Best of Toots Thielemans: Hard To Say Goodbye" containing 15 of his very best recordings. This is where you will enjoy his stunning body of work as well as his commanding flair and creativity not only in harmonica and guitar but also his famous whistle. Mr. Thielemans is one of the Top 20 amongst the jazz artists who were named in "Who's Who of Jazz" so it is not surprising why this CD is one of the best jazz recordings ever produced.

I was asked by a dear friend of mine to describe this CD in three words. My answer was: IT IS SWEET! So there in three words, which pretty sum up what to expect as you listen closely to this CD in its entirety. I will most definitely recommend it to music lovers.

It's written on Liner Notes that Downbeat Magazine has consistently given Toots Thielemans the "First Place" in the category "Miscellaneous Instruments." Clifford Brown made a comment by saying to the great harmonica player of all-time, "Toots, the way you play harmonica, they should not call it a "miscellaneous instrument." It was also noted that most of his fans are also musicians, to name a few - Duke Ellington, Charles Aznavour and Peggy Lee, whom Toots recalled in one of their recording sessions and I quote: "Peggy felt down and had to take a rest. She called me and asked me to sit at the corner of the bed and play lullabies for her."

As you listen to this CD, you'll surely fall in love with the beauty of a smooth, sweet and soothing tune by Ivan Lins and Victor Martins "Velas." Its lush string arrangement was brilliantly done by Johnny Mandel and the rhythm arrangement was exquisitely done by Quincy Jones. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. This is also featured in Quincy Jones album, The Dude.

You'll also love the charms of "Bluesette" with its light and lovely melody. This is his very own composition that he co-wrote with Norman Gimbel and arranged and conducted by Quincy Jones, one of the most innovative arrangers/conductors of all-time. Here, Toots plays guitar and shows off his charming whistle. This tune, as described by Toots, is a "musette interwoven by blues" and of all his recordings this is his "secret pension" because of its "continuing royalties" that never stops.

One of the most ear-catching Antonio Carlos Jobim Bossa Nova classics is included in the repertoire, my very favorite "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," which he plays with the Shirley Horn Trio (Shirley on piano - [yes, she's really good at it], Charles Able on electric bass and Steve Williams on drums). Here Toots plays his lovely harmonica, guitar and whistle.

Listen closely and enjoy the memory-evoking strains of "Good Morning Heartache" with the emotively beautiful vocal art of Laura Figy. Guest singer Lionel Richie is cool and confident as he gives a heartfelt reading of his own lyrics "Nothing Else Matters" with pretty strings arrangement by talented arranger Jeremy Lubbock and additional chart arrangement by James Anthony Carmichael.

Another tune is a Beatles-classic "Imagine" which he included as a sort of a tribute to the "Fab Four," whom he met during their first tour in the USofA. There's an interesting anecdote that Toots shares on Liner Notes. Sometime in the sixties, the Beatles heard him playing a new type of electric guitar, a Rickenbacker, on a record with the George Shearing Quintet. John called the manufacturer and asked if they could listen to Toots play his Rickenbacker. So Toots and the manufacturer went to New York Plaza Hotel where the famous Beatles were staying. John Lennon said to Toots: "So you are the man from that guitar. I say if that guitar is good enough for George Shearing, it's bloody good enough for us." He bought the guitar immediately and it was heard in the recording of "Can't Buy Me Love." Rickenbacker became a buzz word and led to a lot of guitars being sold, but Toots claimed he didn't earn a cent on them.

Some great standards that are performed so nicely include "My Funny Valentine," "Over The Rainbow" and "Make Someone Happy." Also standouts are the first track "Circle of Smiles" and his very own compositions "Old Friend" and "Hard To Say Goodbye," which is just the perfect tune to finish up your wonderful and unforgettable musical journey with Toots Thielemans.

Ready for a second listen? Or even a third, or a fourth?

"Music is not made, it is even difficult to describe, you have to play it, relaxed and spontaneously." ~ Toots Thielemans ~
