Book Description

September 2002
'You are what you eat' may be considered just an old saying, but like most old sayings, it has an element of truth. Our digestive system is the focal point of our body. The ability to absorb nutrients from our food is the key to our survival and a healthy digestive system is vital for our general well being. However, in our rushed, modern lifestyles it is often unintentionally abused, causing our health to deteriorate from the inside out. Many illnesses, from chronic diseases such as cancer to many modern allergies can be traced to underlying intestinal problems. Dr John McKenna gives a clear description of our digestive system, how it works and how it can go wrong. Drawing from his experience of treating hundreds of patients with digestive problems, he has given us a guide that is highly informative yet easy to read and even humorous in places. He looks at both conventional and alternative medicine, showing the reader how to combine both practices to their own advantage. Most importantly, he emphasises how critical the digestive tract is to our physical, mental and emotional well being, providing us with the foundation for good health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Stomach, easy to read., November 2, 2009
By
This review is from: Hard to Stomach: Solutions to Your Digestive Problems (Paperback)
At Cloona Health Retreat we have been running detox programs for over 30 years. This is probably the clearest, simplest and most effective exposition of the whole process that has been published in that time. It explains in lay terms how digestion takes place and what can go wrong with it, what are the effects of digestive disorders, and what you can do about them. For example, would you have automatically known that skin rashes are more than likely to stem from fungal/bacteriological overgrowth in the intestines? Or food allergies? Or that fermentation causes lack of energy, headaches, bad breath, poor sleep, mood swings, nausea...? The book gives very helpful ideas about modifying diet to assist normalisation of intestinal disturbance, including which supplements and why, and in our opinion makes essential reading for all practitioners (conventional and complementary) and parents (it clearly explains the effect of sugar on the system, for example). We recommend this book to all guests doing our detox program. Perhaps it could be said that since the stomach is but a small part of the whole digestive tract a better title for this book might have been `Gut Reactions' because, believe me, if you didn't have a good sense of them before reading this book, you certainly will after.

4.0 out of 5 stars A doctor with an open mind, January 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hard to Stomach: Solutions to Your Digestive Problems (Paperback)
Cant say I agree with it all but its refreshing to see a doctor with an open mind prepared to look beyond conventional drugs.

The book will give you very good details of digestive problems
and make you think more about your own health.

Very worth a read if you suffer from and stomach related issues.

But also dont miss Elain Gotchells Breaking the Vicious Cycle if
you have a serious problem with IBD or Chrones
