HARD TALES TO TELL,
By Donna Mincher (Amarillo, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hard Tales To Tell (Audio CD)
Listening to HARD TALES TO TELL is an unusual and extraordinary experience. A cycle of songs that are based (not exclusively, apparently) on the composer's work as a psychologist, this CD works on many levels. First of all, the musicianship is excellent, and the arrangements are interesting and creative. Sachs's voice has limited range, but when he sings, he does so with passion and care (I can understand most of the words!). But the songs, themselves, are like mini-dramas, each one telling a complicated (and usually painful) story. My favorite is "Dream Avenue" which actually tells three tales--a story about confronting a homeless man, a story about a man watching his daughter kissing her boyfriend, and a story about a young man sharing a joint with his dying mother. Another favorite, "Miracle of Love" tells the tale of a police officer who adopts an abandoned AIDS baby. The CD is accompanied by a well-designed booklet and the composer's comments about what prompted him to write the songs. All in all, HARD TALES TO TELL is well worth the listen. Donna Mincher |
