Book Description

Bev Morriss 4 January 15, 2008
Detective Sergeant Bev Morriss is having a hard time. Struggling with the aftermath of a vicious attack, she can scarcely trust her own judgment. Her lover is moving on, the guv is losing patience, and her new partner has the empathy of a house brick. Then another police officer dies and a ransom note arrives. And hard doesn't begin to cover it. The fourth gritty police procedural in the acclaimed series which began with Working Girls. ""Birmingham Sergeant Bev Morris juggles a complicated personal life, the murder of a police officer, and a mysterious ransom note in the fourth in the series.""-Library Journal ""Bev Morriss, the outwardly tough-as-nails British police detective who's wracked by inner turmoil, returns in another hard-eged thriller.... As usual, Carter writes with a bluntness that perfectly suits the material, and Morriss, who is still trying to come to terms with an incident that nearly destroyed her, is a multilayered, completely sympathetic, and engaging protagonist - not unlike Maureen O'Donnell in Denise Mina's Garnethill trilogy.""-Booklist.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This well-paced thriller, the fourth installment of Carter's gritty procedural series featuring London Det. Sgt. Bev Morriss, neatly blends two compelling plot lines. Schoolboy Daniel Page has been abducted, apparently by someone he knows who also managed to successfully pass for his mother, Jenny. Morriss struggles with post-traumatic stress and panic attacks as the hunt for the child becomes more frantic. Meanwhile, her fellow detectives are investigating the seemingly accidental deaths of retired police officers who shared a past with Morriss's crusty boss, Superintendent Byford. After an autopsy reveals that one of the retirees had been poisoned with insulin before his fatal plunge, suspicions focus on a major gangster whose son was killed during a police chase. Morriss is the only really developed character, complex enough to make up for everyone else's relative simplicity. Carter deliberately gives away one criminal's motives, but leaves plenty of surprises for the reader to enjoy. (Jan.)
