Wrongly underrated,
By Ken Schoonover, Jr. (Springdale, AR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hard Way (Audio CD)
Clint Black's album The Hard Way is wrongly underrated. Its release was delayed because of a legal dispute Clint had with his ex-manager. Also, except for "We Tell Ourselves", "When My Ship Comes In" and "Something To Cry About", the songs are all ballads, reminiscent of Clint's debut Killin' Time album. Third, only three hit songs came off this record, not the four or five that a Clint Black album typically produces. Nevertheless, Clint has many great songs on this one. Besides the three I just mentioned, the highlights are "Burn One Down", "The Good Old Days", "Wake Up Yesterday", and the title song, "The Hard Way". Clint's friend and lead guitarist, Hayden Nicholas, was Clint's co-writer on all but one of the songs on this album. Furthermore, The Hard Way was the first of Clint's albums that he co-produced(Clint co-produced this record with James Stroud). Clint went on to make good records, but until Nothin' But The Taillights, he did not make another album that comes close to being as great as this one. True, The Hard Way didn't sell as well as some of Clint's other albums. However, I think this album is one of the best Clint has put out in his entire career.

Beginning of the end,
By Cory L. Schwent (Bloomsdale, MO United States) - See all my reviews

This is the last cd that Clint Black released that I can call country. There are a few signs of the things to come here, but you can let them slide by considering the quality of the songs. Almost all of these songs have pure country sounds. For some reason he changed his style to pure pop from stone country. Does he think we like that? Hmm. Get this and his the 2 previous releases and start praying for him to come to his senses.

"The Hard Way" is wrongly underrated,

Clint Black's album The Hard Way, in my opinion, is wrongly underrated. This record's release was delayed because of a legal dispute Clint had with his ex-manager, and I think that that controversy may have detracted from the record itself, which I think is one of the best Clint has ever put out. Also, except for "We Tell Ourselves", "When My Ship Comes In" and "Something To Cry About", the songs on this record are all ballads, reminiscent of Clint's debut Killin' Time album. Third, only three hit songs came off this album, not the four or five that a Clint Black album typically produces. However, I think Clint has many great songs on this record. Besides the three I previously mentioned, The Hard Way(of which I have the cassette version) also includes "The Good Old Days", "Buying Time", "A Woman Has Her Way", "Burn One Down", "Wake Up Yesterday" and the title song, "The Hard Way". On all but one of the songs, Clint's co-writer was Hayden Nicholas, his longtime friend and lead guitarist. Those two guys wrote some awesome tunes for this record. Clint has continued to make good music, but in my opinion, only one of his subsequent records, Nothin' But The Taillights, has come close to being as great as this one. True, The Hard Way didn't sell as well as some of Clint's other albums. However, as I said at the beginning, I consider this album one of Clint's best.
