Daft Punk - a must-have,
By Mo Hossain "Mo" (Charlottesville, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harder Better Faster Stronger (MP3 Download)
Coming from a small town in southwest Virginia, I wouldn't consider technosonic music to be a genre of music that I was familiar with - that is, before coming to the University of Virginia. Over the past three years, I have been able to gain a wider knowledge and have a deeper appreciation for all types of music - especially techno/trance music. One of the artists that I found most intriguing and innovative is Daft Punk. The music of Daft Punk almost seems to create a raw mix of electronic music that is innovative and every-changing. The group's use of combination-synthesized music samples, with live percussion is a similar technique that is used by Karlheinz Shockhausen, who is known for his groundbreaking work in electronic music. He was the pioneer who led the movement in creating the concept of combining both concrete and electronische music. This technique can be used to create a new experience of pleasing sounds that not many people have experienced before. I would now consider Daft Punk to be a well-recognized and nationally known group. Although they contribute their success and influences to their predecessors such as Elton John, the Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones, they have had an even larger impact on artists that have followed them. The prime example can be seen through the music and achievements of Kanye West. Nominated for 8 Grammy awards, and won 4, Kanye West's album Graduation uses sample pieces from Daft Punk to create a technosonic wonder. His 2007 hit song "Stronger" takes a sample from Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." Although the sample itself is a short tidbit of the overall song, the sample is repeated throughout the song and creates the underlying foundation of the success of the song itself. Also, the robotic costumes of Daft Punk also make an appearance in the music video for "Stronger." This song is a clear example of the enticing musical compositions that can be created through the hybrid mix of R&B and technosonic music. West uses the minute sample and weaves it into his work to create a fresh and new perspective on the creative pieces that can be created through experimentation of various musical genres. Similarly, many Daft Punk's other songs such as Digital Love, Around the World, and Face to Face, all use various digital computer sound bites that sound very similar to The Orb, in "Little Fluffy Clouds." Much like Daft Punk themselves, The Orb, was also a well-known electronic group known for their use of samples. I would consider electronic music to be one of the very few genres that embraces the music of the past and incorporates that to create the music of the present-day. What I also find very interesting about the music is that its foundation is based on its use of pre-existing materials - such as past music hits, instrumental or computer sounds, and the environmental landscape. The main reason I even looked into the music of Daft Punk was solely through the snippet I heard from Kanye West's song "Stronger." After hearing the clip, I instantly became interested to this type of music and what it had to offer. If you have not experienced the musical abilities and creativity of Daft Punk, I urge you to reconsider. It will leave with a new outlook on the technosonic genre as whole.

Interesting Techno/ punk combination - I loved how they modify the vocals using a computerized vocalizer/ synthesizer. It's a hybrid of the R&B, punk and techo. It takes tiny samples of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." - with each of those words split into independent short clip which is then synthesized into a computerized techno micro-clip. That clip is repeated throughout the song which gives it a interesting buzz.
But there is nothing memorable beyond that rhythmical repetition. The modified vocalization reminded me to "Believe" by Cher but she builds upon the attention she gets by technical work by actually having a good song (lyrics). that part misses in this song - all you remember is these few synthesized words repeated again and again. I couldn't play this song more than 2-3 times, it starts to fatigue you .
