Reprint Edition of an Aviation Classic!, January 23, 2011
The hardest fought day of the Battle of Britain was 18 August 1940 with over 130 British and German aircraft destroyed. No other BoB day would witness such losses. In 1979 Macdonald and Jane's Publishers released Dr. Alfred Price's wonderfully-researched, evocative book detailing THE HARDEST DAY. In 2010, the 70th anniversary of the BoB, Haynes Publishing turned out this reprint edition. Regardless of the edition, THE HARDEST DAY, BATTLE OF BRITAIN, 18 AUGUST 1940 is a classic.
Price's book, based on extensive documentary research and interviews with surviving British and German BoB participants, recounts the three major attacks undertaken on 18 August by the Luftwaffe and the resulting air combats. By days' end, 236 aircraft had been shot down or damaged in the air or on the ground, various targets in England had been hit and hundreds of military personnel and civilians had been killed or wounded. THE HARDEST DAY brings those dry statistics to life, recounting the various experiences of men, women and children during the day. Photographs, maps, charts and diagrams help produce a full accounting of the day's events.
The Haynes edition differs only from the 1979 version in the inclusion of a delightful 'How This Book Came To Be Written' chapter.
Though it is obviously dated in the light of fresh research since 1979, THE HARDEST DAY is still a compelling and well-written account of one momentous day in that long-ago, epic air battle. Price's book is a must-have for any serious air combat enthusiast. Recommended.
