From the Author

This is a heartfelt attempt to give solid grounds for faith to people seeking God, whether because they are convinced or because they feel they can't be.  There are fundamental assumptions that permit our most simple daily existence, and those assumptions are thoroughly theistic.  We need only turn our attention to that upon which we rely each day to discover that we have been counting on God all along.

I heartily recommend this book.

The problem I was having then was seeing this either/or paradigm being put out where you either believe in a blank slate or you believe in a GPS.

Surprisingly rich humor woven into the script.

Hardwired is an exceptional book. I believe it should become a classic.
Author Jim Miller has a special gift of expressing concepts in a fresh
context, which nudges us to ask "why didn't I think of that?" Miller
reminds me of CS Lewis, who had the creative ability to look at complex
issues in a unique and different way that spoke directly to us. I heartily
recommend this book. I believe it will enlarge your horizons, and stimulate
a new interest in why we behave as we do.

Reaching back across the centuries, Miller taps into Augustine's insight that "Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee" to make a compelling, gripping, and eloquent case for the fact that God's existence is inescapably `Hardwired' into human consciousness. By carefully analyzing the well-worn objections raised by atheists and agnostics against God's existence, he skillfully shows how that even these often angry protests are grounded in the presupposition of God's existence. Miller's skillful mix of scholarly insight, rigorous logic, and human interest stories make Harwired a work of literary art in its own right. It is Christian apologetics with wings. It makes the reader want to run out into the street singing How Great Thou Art.

Hardwired is different than other apologetics books. Rather than trying to convince the reader that they are wrong and that the author is right, Miller stands alongside the skeptic, the doubter, the self-assured agnostic and those who have stopped seeking something greater than themselves to tell them that they're not alone and help them see more clearly the things that they already knew. Like finding a set of keys that had been misplaced, Hardwired helps the reader find clarity where they once had none and equips them for the conversations that are likely to follow.
Miller, as a pastor and storyteller, comes across as someone who deeply cares for those who are genuinely searching for truth and doesn't use this book to beat them over the head with holier-than-thou knowledge. The discussion questions at the end of each chapter are a great bonus and make this a great choice for a group of friends to work through together.

James Miller's "Hardwired" is different. Hardwired doesn't make a case for Chritianity primarily from an empirical, rationalist, historical, scientific point of view (through Western eyes). But, Hardwired makes a case for Christianity from an intuitive sense (somewhat Eastern?). Miller helps readers realize our own "cognitive dissonance" when we don't presuppose God. In order for us to hold some of the "properly basic" assumptions about life & reality, we really do need to presuppose the existence of God. We make choices & live our lives as if God existed. Whether we thought about it or not, or whether those choices were logical. At times, "Hardwired" reminded me how C.S. Lewis would make his case in "Mere Christianity."

"Hardwired" is an intelligent, thought-provoking and entertaining read. It's a good complement to other popular books on the reasonableness of the Christian faith like Tim Keller's "Reason for God" or Lee Strobel's "Case for Christ."

Written for the scientist and theologian, the skeptic and hopeful, the atheist and agnostic. Miller paints a beautiful portrait of how we are all hardwired to know and love God.
