Delicious Vegetarian Food from Scratch,
By
This review is from: The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking (Hardcover)
My brother's a Hare Krishna and switched me on to Hare Krishna cooking. Not only is it vegetarian, it's 'sattvic' which means it's free from onions, garlic, vinegar, and other foods which are thought to induce desire.
The dishes in this book are all made from scratch, using raw ingredients - they don't rely on anything which is pre-made, which results in the food being very 'pure'. But the best thing about this book is that each dish is absolutely delicious. It is my culinary bible!

Prasadam ki jai!,

Great book. Good for newcomers to vegetarianism or Vedic cookery. I've had and used (as does my wife) this book for many years. From samosas to halava it is very comprehensive and usable. Also it is well done, the pictures and line art (of Krishna and the cowherd boys etc.) is also very nice. I once saw the author, spoke to him briefly at the Hare Krishna temple in Philadelphia -- a very humble devotee! Haribol! All glories to Prasadam!

This review is from: The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking (Hardcover)
Simply the best Indian vegetarian cookbook I've used. Well worth waiting the 18 months I've had it on order while it was out of print.Nice, easy to follow recipes with beautiful illustrations covering everything from mouth watering savory dishes to sweet delights. Excellent book for beginners who want to experiment with vegetarian cooking. The delicious dishes will have you craving the next time you open up the book and try something new.

my favorite,

This is my favorite cook book that I use above all others. The full color photos of the preparations inspire me. The organization of the book makes it easy to quickly find what I need, although I think the index could use some improvement.
Although it would be very helpful to have access to a local Indian or organic foods market, I've found that many of the recipes I can adapt in order to use what is commonly available or I can omit the special or foreign ingredients altogether. I do prefer spicier food also, so many of the recipes I cut down the main ingredients but maintained the spiciness. Overall this is a great source for ideas and lots of important info regarding a vegetarian diet (the art of eating), the ingredients used, as well as menu plans.

absolutely delicious and authentic,

This is the best Indian vegetarian cookbook. The recepies are very detailed and easy to follow. Do not worry about the religious title -- you do not need to be a Hare Krishna follower to enjoy this food (I'm not, and I use this cookbook all the time). On the other hand you may feel a little spiritual when cooking, which can't possibly hurt the meal!
What I love about this book, is that after following it, my curries actually taste and look like curries. The same goes for other Indian dishes which I've been trying for ages to make -- now I can get that look and feel (and taste) I've been getting from my favourite Indian restaurants. A note to beginners -- unless you really like it, skip asafetida (a spice) -- your recepies won't suffer, while its smell won't permiate your house.

I've been doing vegetarian cooking (and especially, Bengali cooking) since 1973. I have, literally, dozens of cookbooks. But when I need an authentic, delicious recipe, this is the book I turn to. All of these recipes are authentic recipes from the state of Bengal in northeast India.

Deliiiiicious Krishna! Deliiiiiicious Krishna!,

I made the standard annual New Year's resolution to get my fat lump of self into better shape this year. But I don't have a fortune to spend on personal trainers, gym dandies or those fancy home exercise swing sets.
I want my fitness results like I want my bacon cheeseburgers -- fast, cheap and with questionable scientific merit supporting them. Also, delivered directly to my La-Z-Boy and fed to me in delicious bite-sized chunks. So I improvised. Part of being healthy is eating healthy, so I looked for a recipe book from a group known for being fit and energetic. And in this market, that's easier said than done. From portly Paula Deen to Mario 'Butterbuns' Batali, who can a guy trust to deliver grub more healthy than heart-attacky? So I took a shot in the dark. I've never seen a fat Hare Krishna. And all that dancing around and chanting seems to keep them in pretty good cardio shape. They've got to be eating *something* right. Overall, the meals in this cookbook are delicious and easy to prepare, though I did make a few substitutions. For instance, when a recipe called for 'give away all your possessions, shave your head and hand out flowers at the airport', I used a half cup of lentils instead. It was just as yummy!

For those who like food with flavor that is also nutritious and attractive, regardless of one's religious leanings, this is an excellent cook book.
One may disregard the ritual aspects of making the food an offering and simply eat delicious food that is relatively simply to prepare. I am sending a copy of this book to my sister, who is not a Hindu nor an adherent to Krishna consciousness, but who is a wonderful cook in that the hopes that should I be able to visit her in the future she might cook a Vedic meal. I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone even if you are not a vegetarian. namaste
