Is it dance or meditation?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Harem II (Time of Rhythm) (Audio CD)
There is someting unique about this CD that seperates it from the other two Harem albums that I own. The first Harem album Rythm Colour is more acustic. That one is a must have if you like traditional sound but done well. Harem II (this one) has more techno but it has a meditational element to it that is hard to describe. It is perfect to play start to end. It is truly spritual. It moves your soul and whiggles your body. Harem III also has a number of excellent entumental tracks but some of the vocal tracks are annoying. If you like the techno element in this second album, you really need to check out some of the tracks in the third one. If you are an acoustic person, stick with I, II only..

Quite possibly the best of the latest from the Middle East,
This review is from: Harem 2 (Audio CD)
Harem is definitely *not* your stereotypical Middle Eastern percussion band. They openly experiment with blending Middle Eastern music and Western, and the results are nothing short of stupendous! The instruments and rhythms are familiar, but are used in new and creative ways. Add to this the fact that the musicians are all first-rate, and you have music with an energy that's been missing from Middle Eastern music. I like the fact the group has incorporated a couple of "straight traditional" pieces in the CD, and am constantly impressed by their musical ability. Fantastic! Those who attempt to dance to this music are going to find it requires being able to think "outside the box" - Way beyond the reach of the average belly dancer. Not because the instruments and the rhythms are unfamiliar, but because the music is so innovative, so *fresh*!

The music is great! I am a belly dancer and I'm always searching for music. This music is perfect for dancing, has lots of great shimmy tunes. It is also just great listening music. It's vibrant, exciting and makes you want to get up dance. My daughter is into techno, trance, etc. and really loves this CD as well. I highly recommend it to everyone, and especially to dancers. I plan to purchase Harem I.

The CD is one of the best from the 5 CDs Harem brought out in recent decade. The title "Sultana" is absolutely delightful with full of Oriental Violin tunes. Balkan Drams is another great tune, though all of the other tunes are great. This group is probably the best procession group out of Mediterranean Basin. Get ready to dance, and get people dance with this CD. Absolutely a must have. Every CD Harem brings out; the group gets better and better. I am sad that the New World is so strange to this type of delightful music. I guess the ignorance is bliss.

Trance Belly Dance,

I have just recently become involved in the local bellydance community here in Alberta and being as isolated as we are it is difficult to get access to a good quality and quantity of bellydancing, and even middle-east music in general. This CD I got ahold of about a month ago through the company I take lessons from and wow! For such a limited array this CD was an amazing find! It is fast-paced and funky bellydancing music. It has some slower, more rhythmic numbers, but the majority is fast, loud and it makes you want to get up and dance! Some of the selections are mixed with trance and dance beats, so there is a drum beat and then a dance beat over it and it sounds so funky! It is like the modern world meets the middle-east. The rhythms are uplifting and energetic, and as a younger bellydancer I love the sheer energy this CD has. I recommend it if you want to deviate from just traditional bellydance and get into more modern techno beats as well.
