About the Brand

Haribo, founded in 1920 in Bonn, Germany by Hans Riegel, is one of the most prominent manufacturers of sweets (namely fruit gums, licorice, and foam) in the world. The company name is an acronym for "Hans Riegel, Bonn" and stands as a reminder of Haribo's continuing loyalty to early traditions. After Hans Riegel died during World War II, his son, also named Hans Riegel, took over the factory and expanded its operations, taking over many local confectionery manufacturers in countries all over the world. Currently, Haribo operates five factories in Germany and 13 throughout the rest of Europe. The company also has sales offices in almost every country in Europe as well as in the Unites States. Haribo's German catch phrase is "Haribo macht kinder froh / und Erwachsene ebenso," which translates as "Kids and grown-ups love it so / the happy world of Haribo."

German sweet licorice is nothing like American; it's flavored with licorice root, not just anise oil, and it's darkly delicious. Haribo, that German maker of gummis, makes a fine licorice wheel or snail; you unroll the licorice into a long whip or else you can bite into the wheel like a cake if you are not prone to play with your candy or blow bubbles with your gum. Your choice; either way, this is excellent licorice and a real treat.

These licorice wheels are perfect for the black licorice addict! Eating three of them gives you 35% of your daily iron and even some calicium! Haribo black licorice wheels are hard to find where I live, and I have been known to drive 35 miles one way to get some, but no more! Thanks Amazon! BTW, this bag is HUGE and heavy! I'm stocked up for at least a week!

I received a 5 pound bag today, March 9, 2011 that had a "use by 2/2011" on the package.

When I contacted Amazon they credited me back the charge. Great customer service but would be hesitant to order this product again. If you order it I suggest you check the "use by" date on the packaging.

Opened package, had a strong chemical/plastic smell, tossed it in the dumpster.

I like licorice. That I ordered 5 lbs of the stuff on spec should drive that point home. This is very good--not the best I've ever had, but very close. It's not too sweet, not too soft, not too hard, not too salty, a little chewy--very good, overall, and very reasonably priced. Perhaps if I eat it all I will finally 'od' on licorice and leave it alone for a long while. Update: Did not overdose on licorice. Note to self: never order 5 lbs of any candy again. Note to others: Licorice can raise blood pressure. If you are watching your blood pressure, don't buy 5 lbs. The best licorice I've ever tasted was Lucky something. It's made with beet juice as a sweetener. Tastes wonderful and has perfect texture, but is pricey.

This product is definitely for licorice lovers. There is an abudance of flavor and a slightly dense texture which I prefer over softer, or gummy versions of licorice candies. That makes this particular brand and form of licorice my very top choice at present. I think it's unlikely I'll find one I like more any time soon. I don't buy it often, but when I'm really in the mood for a licorice flavored treat this is the one for me. Well done Haribo!

It's a LOT of licorice, but I like the flavor and will be happy to work my way through that big bag. I'm pleased with this product.

We love black licorice and think that Haribo Wheels is one of the best kinds we have had. It has more licorice flavor then any brand made in America. I buy a couple of 5 pound boxes of it every year.

The Black Licorice Wheel truly are the old-penny candy kind. They are very fresh and have a wonderful licorice flavor. My sister just loves them and that is why I bought them.
