5.0 out of 5 stars Quality coffee maker
This is a well thought out product. I've had many drip coffee makers over 3 1/2 decades and this is the best. It has a very large hole in the bottom and substantial ridges on the sides so clogging is unlikely if if used properly (Melitta filters can clog as they restrict flow and coffee ground too fine can be a problem as well). 2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.
In my search for a bpa-free coffee maker, I landed here and ordered confidently based on the great reviews. I watched youtube videos and followed all of the tips about rinsing the filter, letting the grounds "bloom," and then pouring slowly but steadily. No matter how I tweaked the grounds or my flow, by the time I got a full cup of coffee, it was cold. After rewarming it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality coffee maker, December 27, 2010
This review is from: Hario VDC-02W Dripper V60 Size 02 White Ceramic Funnel (Kitchen)
It has a wide base so I use it on top of my 4 cup coffee carafe. Warm the dripper under the tap before using, then time the water flow for 3 to 5 minutes and use a fork to make sure all the grounds are wet when beginning. Pour in the middle, only washing down the coffee stuck to the walls periodically using as little water on the sides as possible. I like this dripper because I can use a standard coffee filter. The Chemex filters are very expensive. Whatever you do, consider ridding yourself of plastic coffee makers with teflon warming plates--these products are carcinogenic.

This really makes a great cup of coffee. I really love it. In order for it perform, I suggest going out on the 'net and watching Youtube videos. There are several of how to really brew with it. Don't expect it to be less work or less time. It actually probably takes a little more effort than just scooping coffee into a drip maker, but the results are so much more enjoyable. Enough of bad coffee! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent French Press Alternative, March 2, 2011

The Hario V60 Manual Drip Cone

I've found that the Hario V60 is an excellent alternative to a French press.

First, the V60 has an elegant design, and a very sound construction. It is clearly well made. If you are interested in this type of product, it may be helpful to know that Hario sells a plastic version of this drip cone for about $9.00. So you should be asking yourself, why would I want to pay the extra money to upgrade to a ceramic model? For me, I don't like the idea of hot plastic being anywhere near my coffee (or food for that matter). The second benefit of the ceramic model is that it retains heat MUCH better than plastic. With the pour-over method of coffee brewing, you need to plan ahead and pre-heat your drip cone, carafe and coffee cup or you will end up with a luke-warm cup of coffee. The ceramic makes this much easier.

This product is not for everyone. If you prefer a Mr. Coffee that you can program to make your coffee for you, by all means skip the Hario. But, if you really care about the details of how your coffee is made, and you like being able to orchestrate the process yourself, the V60 is an excellent choice. I have a Bodum Brazil French press, which is equally well made. But I prefer the Hario. The French press extracts more caffeine from coffee than the manual drip method, it leaves sediment behind in the coffee, and studies have shown that French press style coffee may raise levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood. I don't take the cholesterol claims all that seriously, but I do find them interesting. Coffee people are very passionate about their preferred brew methods, and I appreciate the people in the French press camp. For me, the V60 is an excellent way to brew coffee in the exact amount I want to drink. And it's delicious! This drip cone, paired with proper technique (search youtube), will bring out the full array of flavors from your beans.

I'm very happy with it, and give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Extra Money...., April 24, 2011

We had been using the cheapo plastic filter holders for years so was excited to try this one out when I first read about it. In fact, I also ordered the Hario VKB-120HSV V60 Coffee Drip Kettle Buono to go along. The plastic holders work fine for traveling, but why not go with a decent funnel for home.

Having used the Hario for a few months now, there are several advantages I found. First and most importantly is that the ceramic holder maintains heat much longer than plastic. So while your hot water is being filtered through the grounds, the water temperature is not lost as rapidly as when it goes through a plastic holder. A filter also fits in more cleanly into the Hario holder to minimize spillage which can sometimes happen. The shape of the holder including hole size at bottom also seems to work in helping to produce a better quality cup of coffee.

In fact, my wife and I did a side-by-side test where we made identical cups of coffee using the Hario funnel versus our other plastic one. We were both skeptical that there would be any taste difference between the two. But I must say that there was a noticeable difference with the Hario one far superior.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Low-Tech Coffee maker, August 13, 2011
This review is from: Hario VDC-02W Dripper V60 Size 02 White Ceramic Funnel (Kitchen)
I have used many types of coffee makers over the years, but the Hario ceramic coffee dripper is the best. Here are the reasons why.

1) It doesn't take up space like a traditional coffee maker. I live in an apartment, and any new kitchen appliance takes up valuable real estate. My coffee dripper has no wires and sits on a shelf when not in use.

2) It's not made of plastic. One thing that bugs me about most coffee makers is that they are made of plastic. Contrary to modern medical opinion, I believe that boiling water that has been in contact with plastic should not be consumed. Because it's made of ceramic, the dripper is super easy to clean. I just dump out the filter and rinse it right after.

3) Better coffee. Making coffee this way is more labor intensive, but the result is better coffee, or at least you have more control over the results. Unlike drip machines, percolators or K-cup makers, you have total control of water temperature and how fast the water absorbs coffee. I like to pour the freshly boiled water over the grounds slowly, a little bit at a time, for a more robust cup.

The Hario ceramic coffee dripper also makes great ice coffee. What I do is make a strong cup of regular coffee, let it stand for 30 minutes, then refrigerate until its chilled.

My wife and I have gotten a lot of use out of the Hario Dripper. It's fantastic when you just need to whip up a single cup of coffee. And with ceramic, we don't have to worry about the boiling water potentially causing any plastic to leech. Very durable and goes in the dishwasher without a problem. Water flows through fine and the results taste great. But since it's not transparent, you just need to check to make sure you don't pour in too much water. Only downside might be finding the filters that you need for this, but have had no problem ordering them via Amazon.

Exactly what I wanted. I had bought the HIC cone first, but the HIC made such a very weak brew I sent it back. When I first openned the Hario, I groaned because the hole where the water flows through was so big, that I thought it would make a weaker brew than the HIC. However, the Hario made a great cup of coffee. I used a generic, #2 unbleached cone type filter. I put the coffee cup with the Hario on the heating plate of my drip coffee maker, pour the water through the coffee maker and it drips into the Hario and drains into my coffee mug. I always lay a basket, flat bottom filter on top of the coffee grounds to slow down the water flow and to prevent coffee splashing on the coffee maker. Neat and easy. I have to buy 2 types of coffee filters, but it is well worth it to make such a good brew and not have to use one of those plastic funnels.
The Hario Size 2 is the perfect size for making a single mug of coffee. Highly recommend this.

I just received this Hario dripper. It is EXCELLENT!!! My wife and I tried it immediately, and it made an amazing cup of coffee. I do suggest watching a YouTube video of it, so it is used properly. It does take some getting used to. We have used a Bodum French Press for a while, and love it. Although, if we only need a couple of cups of coffee, with a lot less cleanup, and just as good, if not better tasting ...this is IT! I do suggest getting good beans.
