The product helped me to get my Old Towne tandem kayak off the garage floor. The components of the product appear to be good solid parts that will last a long time. Installation instructions are clear and easy to follow. My recommendations: 1) Don't start your preparations for installation until you receive the instructions. 2) Follow the instructions and you won't go wrong. 3) Buy a cleat ($1.99 at Ace Hardware) to mount on your wall and wrap the cord around becuase that is the only component that I needed that is not a part of the Harken Hoister package.

The Harken Hoister works exactly as advertised. I am using it to lift and store a kayak in my garage. The hardware and ropes that come with this product are top quality. You raise and lower your boat using only one rope to control the four attachment points - two slings under the boat, as shown in the photo. The rope has an automatic brake that stops the boat from falling if you let go of the rope.
To get the full 10-foot lift with this product, you must have 10-feet of space in front of the ceiling-mounted "rope organizer". Make sure that you can meet all of the installation requirements before buying - the supplier has a "no returns" policy but they will answer your pre-sale questions promptly. You can also call Harken customer service and speak to a knowledgeable person located in the U.S. The instruction manual can be downloaded from the Harken website.

You can find cheaper hoisting products, but they will have the following problems:
1) Use cheap rope that you will need to replace;
2) Requiring pulling on two ropes simultaneously to raise/lower your boat;
3) Not have an automatic brake;
4) Use only two attachment points on the ceiling and not raise your boat high enough to walk under it.

If you cannot meet the installation requirements to get the full 10-foot lift, you have the option to lower your boat onto saw horses or tripods (not included). Under very specific circumstances, you could raise/lower the boat directly from your car. But that would depend on a number of factors, including the size of your garage and the height of your garage door. If you drive a SUV, you probably cannot clear the top of your garage door with a boat on your roof.

First of all, the item arrived quickly and in good shape. I am very happy with the purchase experience with this saler.
Now, on to the item itslef. I have to be honest... I did not purchase this for a canoe or kayak. I am using it to hoist my jeep's hard top and it works great. I had been looking for such a hoist for a while and I found THIS EXACT SAME ONE at a Jeep parts site "quadratec", but they sell it more expensive AND as well as more for shipping. After reading and comparing the models, I realized this is the same model, just the instructions provided in the box are different. I just downloaded the instructions from the other site and installed it.

Again, this works great! perfect for my Jeep top, I recommend it.

Just what you'd expect from a company that makes hardware for sailboats -- great design and quality materials. Couldn't be better. It's a little fiddly to get all the lines and attachment points setup right, but once it's all adjusted, it's simple to use and very secure. Holds my 18' canoe firmly against the rafters of my patio roof.

If you are looking at this product, you need to understand Harken stands for quality. I have used Harken pulleys and other rigging on my sail boats for years with no issues. I was a little hesitant because the price was a little high, but I thought I would give it a shot. I ordered 2 hoists, one for each pontoon of my boat. All the parts included were of typical harken quality - high! I spent the most time trying to figure out the spacing and balance points to place the mounts on the ceiling. You definitely need to read the directions to make sure you get it right. You will need to purchase some additional supplies - 2 2x6 boards, washers and lag bolts for mounting the hardware to the ceiling. That said, I am very pleased with the hoisting system. My 8 year old can hoist a Hobie pontoon with ease. The locking mechanism is solid and I have no worries about the hoist dropping its load. I am very satisfied with the product and the seller was great - quick shipping no problems.

This is a satisfactory storage solution but a lot of work. Pros: High quality components. Cons: Complex and time-consuming installation and instructions need clarification. Although I work at a desk, I have had 40 or more years using power and hand tools. I installed two Harken Hoister 7802 (90 lb Systems) in my garage for storage of two light touring kayaks. Both are now safely stored against my garage ceiling. However, I could have been helped with the following tips:
1: Go online and begin the installation process before the hoist arrives. Read and follow the instructions for installing the 2 X 6 mounting boards (equipment for which is not supplied, including the lag bolts and washers). You will need to know the length and width of what you are lifting and storing. For objects such as kayaks, this is easy. Carefully locate the rafters. No, not all rafters are 16" on center. Mine were generally 24" on center. Yes, the front mounting board must be at least the same or greater distance from the front wall where you attach the eye screw than the distance of the lowest drop point point (normally the floor of the garage). But you can make adjustments, including the placement of the eye screw and whether you want to lower the object to the top of the car or a set of saw horses on the garage floor. Buy a rope cleat so you can tie off the hoist line when you have completed the installation.
2. When mounting the front mounting board, try to offset in a way so that a center mounting bolt doesn't interfere with placement of the "organizer."
3. CRITICAL: Once you start installing the hoist, you must move the block and tackle component to the LOWEST point.
