5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Driving Bluegrass, August 31, 2001
By
Pete Dumanis (Williamsport, Pa.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harlan County Five String (Audio CD)
This album is the closest I've heard to classic Stanley Brothers bluegrass, specifically "How Mountain Girls Can Love" and "Think of What You've Done". Sparkman's banjo picking is tight, flawless and driving. It is as if Ralph Stanley's spirit was shared through a younger apprentice, though Sparkman is most assuredly his own individual with his own masterful style. His version of "Pike County Breakdown" (played by an endless array of tepid bluegrass groups) is the most meticulously pulse - throbbing version I've ever heard. Sparkman derserves stardom.

5.0 out of 5 stars best banjo in america, February 17, 2004
By
carolyn harris (lancaster, ky United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harlan County Five String (Audio CD)
this album is the best banjo album of all times. it pays great tribute to the stanley style of banjo playing. steve has patterened his playing around that of ralph stanley and has all respect for the music. just a note ( steve taught himself to play the banjo by listening to the stanley brothers albums ) never a lesson !! i will be getting married to this banjo player soon and know for a fact that his is as good a person as he is a banjo player. BE CAREFUL IF YOU LISTEN WHILE DRIVING!! IT MAY CAUSE EXCESSIVE SPEEDS ! ENJOY. Carolyn Harris
