Book Description

September 26, 2006
“A true urban novel filled with vivid images of the street.”
–Black Issues Book Review

Treasure E. Blue, street lit’s hottest newcomer, crafts characters that fly off the page and a story that burns with intensity. Set in Harlem, this searing novel is a poignant and gritty portrait of urban survival of the ghetto’s fittest . . . and most fierce.

Silver Jones knows just how cruel life can be. Her mother was chewed up and spit out by its dark side–brutally murdered while turning a trick. Rather than live with her abusive grandmother, Silver runs away.

Determined to escape the mean streets, Silver longs for an education. But after running into an old friend, a homeless youth named Chance whom she’d taken under her wing once upon a time, Silver puts her dreams of college on hold. Chance is grown now–and he’s a powerful drug overlord. But underneath the cool exterior is the same innocent boy Silver once loved.

As they begin an affair, Silver tries to convince Chance to give up the lethal way of life that ruined both their childhoods. But Chance knows that walking away from the game means having to pay a deadly price. Silver won’t take no for an answer–even if it means delving into a seedy underworld and outscheming some of its most vicious drug-dealers and cold-blooded murderers.

“Even in Blue’s world of double-crossing, misogyny, drugs and brutality, an against-all-odds fairy tale can come true.”
–Publishers Weekly

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This lurid urban soap opera—which sold 65,000 copies when originally self-published by the author, a Bronx fire inspector—follows Silver Jones as she flees Harlem, with its loose women of the night and seductive, heroin-shooting men, for Spelman College, where she dreams of becoming a doctor. Blue's wide cast is often villainous, paper thin and brimming with crack-smokers and sex-peddlers: there's Silver's confidant, Auntie Birdie, a "nearly 7 foot when he wears his stilettos" transvestite hooker who falls for men with roving eyes; Jesse, Silver's "junkie whore" of a mother whose inspirational aphorisms shape Silver's life; Chance, Silver's longtime, drug-dealing love who doesn't know how to dance; and a serial killer who drains his prostitute victims' blood and dresses each in a wedding gown before having sex with their bodies. The episodic story line, which has echoes of another successful lost-girl saga, White Oleander, moves briskly and assuredly between clichés. Suspense isn't one of the author's strong points, but it's heartening that even in Blue's world of double-crossing, misogyny, drugs and brutality, an against-all-odds fairy tale can come true. (Oct.)

From Booklist

Blue's story is another great addition to the urban-drama genre. Silver Jones is growing up istening to the wit of her prostitute mother, Jessie. Jessie feels that instilling her truths will ensure that Silver does not fall prey to horror of the streets. As a result, Silver is wise beyond her years, independent and fearless. At 12, she and a rival, Missy Anderson, becomes friends who no one challenges. After her mother is brutally killed turning a trick one night, Silver is forced to live with her cruel grandmother. After years of emotional abuse, Silver chooses to live on the streets but still holds onto her dream of becoming a doctor and moving out of the ghetto. She runs into a childhood friend, Chance, who is a powerful drug dealer. She puts her aspirations on hold and tries to convince Chance to give up his lifestyle. Chance knows that he cannot just walk away, and Silver is willing to take on the world and underworld to make sure he can. Lillian Lewis

More About the Author

Many have called Treasure E. Blue the reincarnated Donald Goines. This prolific author without doubt is one of the most shocking and controversial writers that we have seen in decades. Blue's background is as almost as compelling as his mouth-dropping debut novel entitled "Harlem Girl Lost". Using the streets as a means of survival, he soon found himself involved with some of Harlem's most notorious elements. Retiring from the game at the tender age of sixteen, Blue, who dropped out of High School after being banned from the entire Board of Education system, in New York City, managed to become one of the youngest people to receive his G.E.D. in New York State. Joining the military at seventeen, he developed a voracious appetite for books going on to read well over 2000 novels. After serving his country honorably, he joined the New York City Fire Department and worked as a Supervising Fire Inspector in the Bronx. Blue is a father of 4 and won praise for his screenwriting skills. He is also an active member of the American Studies Association. Blue has an uncanny way of not only telling a story, he makes you feel it emotionally as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I found Harlem Girl Lost, November 30, 2004
This review is from: Harlem Girl Lost (Paperback)
Harlem Girl Lost is the story of a young girl, Silver Jones, living a hard knock life. Her mother, Jesse, is a prostitute addicted to drugs. Her mother is estranged from her family because of becoming pregnant with Silver at such a young age. Silver never knew her father. Her only male role model is Auntie Birdie, her mother's transvestite best friend and roommate. Despite her occupation, her mother devotes time to walking Silver to school each day while she drills life lessons into her head. Jesse gives her the brutal and honest truth, allowing her to see her own addiction and the perils of prostitution. These lessons play a vital role in Silver's journey to womanhood. Life was hard, but becomes harder with the murder of her mother. By her side, Silver always had her best friends Missy (I'll die for you b*tch) and Chance. Chance (short for Chancellor) is a kindred soul. He and Silver find comfort in each other because they both have in their short lives seen and experienced things no child should. But without her mother, and circumstances that rip Chance from her life, will Silver make it? Will she learn from her mother's mistakes? Will she let circumstances break her?
Harlem Girl Lost is a well crafted story with plenty of action, drama, pain, twists, and turns. It's hard to believe that this is Treasure's debut novel. Looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treasure has a MASTERPIECE!!, March 29, 2005
This review is from: Harlem Girl Lost (Paperback)
With hip-hop novels dropping on the market like raindrops, author Treasure Blue is the author/artist that has the raindrop that plops you hard on the head, the one you won't forget! He has written a story about the game that is different from alllllllll the rest. His angle about the cruel life and survival in the streets begins with the minds of children and what they survive, in an effort just to try to live as people. He is creative, masterful and meticulous as he weaves in the characters in a street story that is as real as life itself. He hits the readers with surprises and jump-offs that are shocking.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Modern Donald Goines, November 9, 2004
This review is from: Harlem Girl Lost (Paperback)
Treasure Blues' writing is very reminiscent of Doanld Goines. I read the book and was suprised that Treasure was a male. Especially the way he was able to capture the female experience. I also loved the image he portrayed of Silver's mother. He displayed a new level of understanding for people addicted to drugs and their struugle to overcome their demons.
