Editorial Reviews

Playboy lawyer Denny Montana never gives his dowdy but loyal paralegal, Claire Bernard (Joely Collins, TV's Cold Squad), a second glance, but all that changes when his brother Regan (Jonathan Cake, Brideshead Revisited) returns home from England. Seeing a perfect match for Denny in Claire, Regan sends her to be made over, and she returns a ravishing beauty. The plan works when Denny shows newfound interest in Claire...but when Regan sees the two together, jealousy emerges as he realizes he's fallen for her too! Co-starring Dyan Cannon.

I loved it! "Diamond Girl" represents what Harlequin is all about.

I don't know how different this is from the original Diana Palmer's story since I haven't read it yet, but this movie was amazing on its own. Regan and Denny Montana are perfect in their roles. Not to appear superficial but the main heroes are very good-looking (which is a really added bonus). I also like the fact that they are handsome in their own way, differentiating them, matching their roles. Claire wasn't what I expected but she played off both men pretty well and loved her deadpan humor. The acting was superb and the dialogue was funny, perfectly timed and witty. Regan and Claire had nice chemistry but Claire lacked a little bit in her body language and emotions in some of their scenes together. The minor characters were done really well. I even wished there were more scenes with her brother and her friend. There were a lot of parts in the movie that made me laugh out load, giggle or shake my head in disbelief. The ending was really sweet. This movie never lagged and every scene was an interesting one.

There are a few kissing scenes and one sex scene near the end of the movie but nothing R rated. It is in full screen and I noticed at two parts of the movie that were kind of blurry but nothing significant. There are no extras on the DVD.

All in all, for this price, this movie is definitely worth the entertainment value. Definitely a keeper for my shelf.

The story line begins with boyishly charming Denny Montana, who is a playboy lawyer who relies entirely on his paralegal, Claire. Claire infatuated with Denny does everything for him. Denny with the help of Margo, a real estate broker and Denny's current lover, is setting up a deal to sell the Montana family Wine Estate. So Denny's big brother, Regan Montana, returns from England to ensure a fair sale of the estate. Regan and Claire immediately don't like each other when he takes over her office and is excedingly rude and condescending. Regan soon realizes that Claire is the brains behind everything and is essentially running the office. Regan then makes a deal with Claire if she can distract Denny from Margo, Regan will help Claire get Denny. To do this Claire and Regan pretend to have a relationship and he gives her a makeover. Is this pretend relationship really pretend on both sides? And what happens when Claire gets Denny, but then realises he isn't the one she really loves....

I thought the actor that played Denny was cute in a boyish way and I liked the fact that the two brothers were perfect foils for each other. One boyish, cute, and cuddly and the other tough, strong-willed, determined, and handsome in an uncoventional way. I liked Claire's voice, but like the other reviewer I thought she was a little weak in the love scenes. I absolutely adored the actor's voice that played Regan Montana, it was deep, cold with almost a British twist to an American accent. The way he speaks and pauses is very British, which someone living in England for 10 years could conceivably adopt. I thought he was pretty hot in an unconventional manner. I would recommend getting this DVD especially if you like books by Diana Palmer.

Take one playboy boss, his plain assistant secretly in love with him, and throw in an older brother who turns up in time to save the family wine estate, and you have the makings of a Harlequin romance novel. Take that out of Diana Palmer’s 1984 Silhouette Desire “Diamond Girl” and put some of it into a 1998 movie that apparently doesn’t follow the book, and you still have a lovely romantic movie that gives the required happy ending.
I have to admit however, that in the first ten minutes of the movie the characters seemed over-the-top and totally cliched. Denny Montana, the playboy boss, had me wondering how he managed to run a law practice when women and tennis were obviously his game. Claire Barnard, the paralegal, was dowdy but very competent and the brains behind the business. Regan Montana, the older brother, (played by a scrumptious Jonathan Cake) was tall, dark and handsome and so alpha he was a bully. In fact, Claire even called him a bully at one stage.
And then something happened. I forgot these were actors playing characters, and suddenly these characters came to life. At first I thought they had just found their stride but after a while I realized it had probably been deliberate. We had to see how the characters were before they came together so that we could see their character growth throughout the movie. Just like in romance books.
The plot began to deepen when Regan suggests to Claire they pretend to be lovers. Regan wants his younger brother, Denny, to be jealous so Denny will leave his current mistress, who is pushing Denny to sell the vineyard to an unscrupulous buyer. Regan suggests a makeover for Claire, and then proceeds to turn a “diamond in the rough” into a beautiful “diamond girl”.

Let me just say that Regan (Jonathan Cake) is SOOOOOO freakin' HOT in this movie. If you are into movies that are witty, cute, funny, and kind of "fairy tale-ish", with a SUPER DUPER HOT, intelligent, and take charge hero...then this is the movie for you. Jonathan Cake's portrayal of Regan is phenomenal!!! There was a line in the movie that Claire's friend said which I think did a really fantastic job of describing Regan. She said that: "He (Regan) is so cool, the way he just steps in and takes charge. He's a hunk. All the men I know are boys..." Yeah most men are boys, but Regan, he's a real man. Hehe...ok, enough about Regan...the other characters in the movie are great as well. The actress for Claire's friend did a great job, and so did the actor for Denny's role. But as other reviews here have mentioned, I found the actress for Claire's role a bit disappointing. She just comes off a bit cold and reserve. But don't worry people, it takes nothing away from the movie. The story line is still quite strong, and all in all made a great movie.
