This book chronicles such classic 1960s Harley-Davidson motorcycles as the XLCH Sportsters, Duo Glides, Electra Glides, Aermacchi models, Panheads and Shovelheads. Special attention is given to the Sportster's status as the world's pre-eminent superbike in 1960 and how it lost that distinction mid-decade with the emergence of Japanese and British marques. The technology of Harley-Davidson's Big Twin engine is also discussed, as are custom bikes and the 1969 takeover of the company by AMF -- a move that nearly spelled the end of Harley-Davidson. Illustrated throughout with superb color photography of lovingly restored and factory-original bikes.
