Harley Hahn's excellent Web directory may be the only one with an introduction that is something of a continuing saga--he includes all of the previous introductions and adds new parts to each edition. In this fifth edition, Hahn continues to write whimsical "ads" in the style of phone book yellow pages and sprinkles the guide with nifty excerpts from newsgroups, FAQs, and Web sites. The directory's comprehensive list of categories and subcategories--art, computers, movies, sports, politics, environment, philosophy, support groups, literature, personal finance, world cultures, music, and more--makes it easy to find exactly what you're looking for. But it is the decidedly unexpected categories that are truly fun: UFOs and aliens, cyberpunk, intrigue, bizarre, cool and useful, cool but useless, vices, and something called "devices and gizmos connected to the Net." The book concludes with a good index and also contains a CD-ROM with a searchable database of the sites listed in the book. And if paging through this directory isn't already a great way to pass the time, Hahn includes a list of 25 things to do on the Net when you should be working.

When film first appeared, it took years for the first filmmakers to unbolt the camera from the floor and do more than parade people in front of the lens. These ubiquitous "yellow" pages to the Internet are similar to bolted-down cameras. The organization is always alphabetic, a weak way to organize information since freedom does not really need to come next to fun, and "see references" are never as easy as HTML links. In sheer numbers of citations, they pale in comparison with the resource collections on gateway sites such as Yahoo, and in terms of selectivity, users would be better served by the evolving bookmark files in many public libraries. The only benefit is the format's familiarity, making these gentle introductions for folks new to the net. If newbies are still asking for this sort of hand-holding, buy Polly's book, which is the most selective and focused of the three.

There are now more than 1 billion web pages, and 1 billion web pages laid end to end (if each page were the size of 1 standard sheet of paper) would encircle the Earth's equator almost seven times. The people who make a living counting these things predict that within the next three years, the Internet might grow to as many as 13 billion pages. You may have noticed lately that your Search Engines aren't working as well as they once did: more and more you look at less and less of what you really want. The search engines have too much territory to cover. If you're using the a search engine as your best resource to find something on the Web, you're like the diehard pioneer going around the world in a covered wagon pulled by a team of Galapagos tortoises. Seek and ye shall find irrelevant results. Ironically, it may prove that the best way to search the Net is to use the resources that the Net is supposedly replacing: good old-fashioned books. The classic in this field is Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages, a web directory with personality and verve. Hahn and his professional research staff have sifted through the haystack and found the most interesting, informative, and humorous sites. In case you've never seen this tome, it's large and yellow like a big-city telephone directory, and it's filled with Internet resources: mostly websites, but also a generous sprinkling of the best newsgroups and mailing lists. The directory is annotated: that means, it's filled with Hahn's incredibly funny tidbits, wisdom, anecdotes, sayings, and tales. With the CD that comes with along with the book you won't even need to type (or mistype) any URLs: clicking from the CD (which includes every address in the book) takes you to the directly to the website. This Millennium edition has been updated: links have been checked, new sites added, and sections expanded. The literature-related chapters are especially outstanding, with links to everything you could ever desire in the realms of books, writers, publishing, poetry, novels, and much more. "Harley Hahn's Internet and Yellow Pages" is a treasure to be enjoyed and shared with everyone you care about. Not only is it a listing of the BEST websites, Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists on the Internet, but when you read this book, you will pick up enough information on a wide variety of topics to make you the smartest person on your block (unless you live on the same block as Harley Hahn).If you need more fun in your life, or if you are feeling tired, cranky, or just plain out-of-sorts, reading this book will make you smile and feel good about life. You can pick a topic that interests you and go from there, or you can do as I did, start at the beginning and enjoy it all the way to the end. (Be sure and keep a pack of post-its with you as you read it.) The book comes with a CD-Rom with the URLs hot-linked so you can click and visit all of the sites that are mentioned in the book. This alone will keep you happily occupied until the next edition is published. And if you want to learn everything you need to know about using the Internet, pick up "Harley Hahn Teaches the Internet," which I also highly recommend.

This is not a conventional Web Guide Book which enumerates only URLs. Web sites,Usenet groups and mailing lists appear in this book are thoughtfully selected by Harley Hahn in order to be actually useful for Net surfers. We can save time by referring to this guide book when we search certain subject on the Net. And we can also enjoy ourselves only by running our eyes through it in which many of the comments are full of humor. I would like to recommend this book to all Internet users who are looking forward to find useful Internet Guide Book.
