Book Description

January 22, 2008
We are told women in the Old Testament were traitors, whores, and harlots. We rarely hear of Deborah, mighty Judge of Israel; of Jael, who single-handedly brought down an army General; of Achsah, who owned and ran a great city. Delilah, in reality a woman in fear of her life, is presented as the archetypal traitorous temptress. In those early times, inheritance was passed though women, and husbands lived with the wife's family. The society was of mother-right and matriarchy. Yet Religion has allied itself with Patriarchy to present instead to the church-goer and world at large an entirely different picture. Historian Patricia Erlandsen sets out the facts in this fascinating story of powerful women and powerless women from Genesis to Judges.

About the Author

Historian, Teacher, Motivational Speaker, and Coaching Consultant Patricia Erlandsen is the Director of Run With the Vision Ministries which she founded in 1985. After joining the church in 1972, Patricia soon became disillusioned with the gender discrimination she encountered in church practices which viewed women as followers, weak in nature and physical strength, subordinate by nature, passive, cowardly, emotional, and lacking self control. This lead to Patricia completing a degree in the history of women in ancient Israel, a topic which is now her field of research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary! February 25, 2008
Format:Paperback
It's very revealing to read the historical facts behind what we think we know. This book is super thorough and very well researched with thorough notes, but is a really good interesting read as well. I was pretty well shocked when it pointed out the facts about what I had heard in church for years about these women. The author makes the women and their stories come alive. A good read and necessary book for all Christians and interested persons - it's especially a necessary book for Christians.

I recommend for all other women who have embraced Christ's love and reverence for women but are puzzled by the degradation of women by Christianity. And for all men who, like Christ, have loving hearts for their daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers. It is a thoughtful reminder of the complementary gender ideals which many women and men know intuitively to have been divinely intended.
