Key Features

Integrated Green Edge technology

The HARMAN GreenEdge logo assures you that the AVR 1610 is designed for the environment without compromising the premium performance for which HARMAN products are known. Thanks to an advanced power supply, the AVR 1610 can deliver high-quality audio in a smaller, lighter chassis that uses less metal and plastic. The smaller design means that less fuel is used in transportation, with the end result being a lower carbon footprint.

Bluetooth technology and DLNA 1.5 compliance

The AVR 1610 can stream audio from virtually any portable device. You can connect and charge Apple devices such as an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch directly to the front-panel USB jack and play back without the need for an external adapter. For other tablets, smartphones and laptops, you can take advantage of the AVR 1610’s integrated HARMAN TrueStream Bluetooth technology. The AVR is also DLNA 1.5 compliant, which gives you more options for delivering content over your home network.

HARMAN TrueStream technology

The HARMAN TrueStream certification ensures the best possible listening experience when you stream audio wirelessly via Bluetooth technology. HARMAN TrueStream tech delivers the most current, most advanced wireless-option to ensure the highest-quality sound, no matter what application or source device you use.

Built-in vTuner (Internet radio) streaming

The AVR 1610 features vTuner Internet radio to connect you to a whole world of online audio entertainment. As soon as it’s out of the box, you can stream over-the-air radio stations from around the globe as well as stream from a wide range of Internet-only radio stations.

Five 3D-ready HDMI inputs including one with MHL

Five HDMI inputs with 3D and 30/36-bit Deep Color deliver high-definition digital video at resolutions up to 1080p with full-fidelity audio through a single cable. There is no loss of video or audio quality because of format conversion, just full-impact Hollywood excitement as its creators meant you to experience it.

Front-panel USB port for connection to compatible Apple products or USB sticks

The AVR 1610 gives you multiple options for audio playback with its front-panel USB port. Simply connect an iPhone, iPad, iPod or USB stick to play your stored tracks through your home entertainment system.

I received this unit directly through Harman Kardon, not Amazon. Using it with a JBL 5.1 speaker setup and Xbox 360. I had no issues with watching tv or movies, however I did notice some video lag when playing games on xbox (HDMI from xbox to receiver, receiver out via hdmi to tv). For the most part the receiver was easy to setup and sounded great for about a week. On the 7th day of owning it I turned on some tv and the video was completely pink. I turned off the receiver and back on, which seemed to temporarily fix the issue. Within 10 mins of watching tv all my speakers (FR, FL, SW, BR, BL) started blasting the most obnoxious low frequency tone. It sounded as if every signal was suddenly trying to be sub. I called H/K for support and was told I could get a replacement unit under their 1 year warranty however it would be at least a 4 week down time without a unit. (2 weeks to mail in the defective model, 1 week for inspection, and 1 week for a new unit to arrive). I'm a little disappointed I didn't go with Onkyo or Yamaha at this point. My last Yamaha receiver ran for 7 years straight, only replaced it because I needed a new receiver with HDMI ins/outs.

    **Update**
I returned this unit for a full refund and instead ordered a Yamaha RX-V475. I am much happier with the Yamaha and do not have nearly as much video lag when gaming.

Really nice system for the price... sound quality is above average. 85 watts is enough for me since I don't like to use it too loud, if you like to use your system loud maybe this system is not for you... I like the nice glossy look and the low weight (only 10 pounds).

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I got this receiver specifically because it supports network streaming of radio stations. That's a feature I use a lot; although, I'm not setup with any of the common music streaming services.

Instead, I use the VTuner feature to listen to live radio stations over the Internet - which can be hit or miss depending on the receiver.

Fortunately, the VTuner implementation in this receiver is the best I've ever used! It's very fast at picking up stations, and doesn't have any problems keeping them streaming. If I turn the Harmon Kardon off while playing a specific station, it will pick back up within seconds of turning it back on - instead of the long 'buffering' period that I'd grown accustomed to.

I know this may not be a primary usage for a lot of people; but, if you do care about the VTuner network streaming - I would highly recommend this receiver.

As far as the other features go:

    - The sound quality is excellent for this price range. I use a higher-end Denon receiver in my main home theater setup and it definitely sounds better than this HK. The Denon was, however, 3 times the cost and is hooked to better speakers - so I would expect it to sound better.

    - If all your equipment uses HDMI (which most does these days), then you should be good to go with this receiver since it offers 5 inputs. If, on the other hand, you have other connection types - you will probably find this receiver lacking.

    - Network setup is a breeze as long as you have a cable available.

Personally I think this is an excellent solution for people who are looking for good sound from a basic receiver. If, for example, you plan to hook up a Roku and a Wii/Xbox - and also want the wireless streaming, then this should be at the top of your list.

The 10 lb A/V receiver is really amazing - it has the digital switching power supply instead of heavy transformers. Setup is easy,& the sound quality is fine.

    PRO:
    1. The surround sound decoder does work on Dolby Digital & DTS HD audio formats.
    2. The HDMI 1080P display color quality looks good on TV.
    3. The front control panel looks beautiful with a white LED back-light volume knob. The LED will turn off when SLEEP function is activated.
    4. The $399 price tag is not too bad.
    5. Very quiet operation while powering UP & DOWN the receiver. I did not hear any mechanical noise or pops at all.
    6. Tone control (BASS & TREBLE)is programmable for each input source.

    CON:
    1. The only weakness of this product is the OSD (On-screen setup MENU) that looks simple with B&W screen - not very user friendly for Bluetooth setup. Need to turn the volume to the maximum on my tablet, in order to hear the sound from the receiver in BT mode.
    2. No HDMI pass-through in STANDBY.

    Conclusion:

Overall, the receiver works fine so far & with clean sound.

Power consumption test: (measured by a digital wattage meter)

OPERATION MODE (volume at -30db): power consumption is about 42 watts.

    STANDBY MODE:

Stage 1 - "device sleep" message is shown, power consumption is about 9 watts..
stage 2: display is blank, power consumption < 1 watts.

Had video input issues with unit & after talking with hardon/kardon tech support, they agreed it was defective & to return. Just received replacement unit and the front right & left speaker inputs are dead. This AVR receiver was replacing an older hardon/kardon that died. Both of these new units were manufactured in May 2014 & serial #'s are 58 numbers apart. Bad batch?? Don't know, but not giving another chance
