Key Features

Integrated Green Edge technology

The HARMAN GreenEdge logo assures you that the AVR 1710 is designed for the environment without compromising the premium performance for which HARMAN products are known. Thanks to an advanced power supply, the AVR 1710 can deliver high-quality audio in a smaller, lighter chassis that uses less metal and plastic. The smaller design means that less fuel is used in transportation, with the end result being a lower carbon footprint.

Seven 100-watt-per-channel amplifiers with high-performance digital power supply

The AVR 1710 high-performance audio/video receiver pumps out 100 watts per channel to power a full seven-channel surround-sound system. It can also connect to two powered subwoofers to provide enhanced low-frequency performance for all your entertainment. While the amplifier retains the time-tested, high-current-capacity (HCC), ultrawide-bandwidth Harman Kardon design to ensure the most accurate, dynamic sound with enhanced clarity and realism – even at the highest listening levels – a digitally based power supply gives the amplifiers all the muscle they need without the weight of traditional power-supply designs and their heavy transformers. The net result is a great-sounding AVR in a small form factor that’s friendly to the environment.

Apple AirPlay, Bluetooth and DLNA 1.5 technology

The AVR 1710 can stream audio from virtually any portable device. For Apple devices, such as computers and the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, you can stream using the receiver’s built-in AirPlay technology. (AirPlay, vTuner and DLNA connections require a wired connection to a broadband network.) For other tablets, smartphones and laptops, you can take advantage of the AVR 1710’s integrated HARMAN TrueStream Bluetooth technology. A USB port is included on the front of the AVR so you can connect devices directly without an external adapter or a wireless connection. The AVR is also DLNA 1.5 compliant, which gives you multiple options for delivering content over your home network.

HARMAN TrueStream technology

The HARMAN TrueStream guarantee ensures the best possible listening experience when you stream audio wirelessly via Bluetooth technology. HARMAN TrueStream tech selects the most current, most advanced wireless option to ensure the highest-quality sound, no matter what application or source device you use.

Six 3D-ready HDMI inputs, including one with MHL

Six HDMI inputs with 3D and 30/36-bit Deep Color deliver high-definition digital video at resolutions up to 1080p with full-fidelity audio through a single cable. There is no loss of video or audio quality because of format conversion, just full-impact Hollywood excitement as its creators meant you to experience it. And with the AVR’s MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link), you can deliver high-definition audio/video content from your camera, phone, tablet or Roku Streaming Stick dongle directly to your HDTV via the AVR 1710’s MHL connection.

Dual subwoofer outputs

Is your listening room so large that you need two subwoofers to deliver the bass that you desire? That’s not a problem with the AVR 1710, thanks to dual subwoofer outputs that give your system a big-time boost in low-frequency clarity and realism when needed.

Multiroom system with audio output and assignable amplifier

Control the audio in separate rooms with a single receiver. Thanks to the AVR 1710’s assignable amplifiers, you can power the audio in a second room without adding additional components. That means you can watch sports in one room while you play the soothing sounds of classical music in another.

Front-panel USB port

The AVR 1710 gives you multiple options for audio playback with its front-panel USB port. Simply connect an iPhone, iPad, iPod or USB stick to play your stored tracks through your home entertainment system. The integrated USB port also charges your iOS devices.

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding

The AVR 1710 delivers high-resolution audio that matches the digital-video quality of Blu-ray Disc formats, unlocking the full potential of movie soundtracks formatted with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio coding. No matter what mode or mood you are in, you’ll always hear audio playback at its finest.

EzSet/EQ III auto-calibration

The new HARMAN EzSet/EQ III auto-calibration process precisely adjusts the AVR 1710’s volume levels, speaker-distance/delay-time settings and equalization to optimize audio performance automatically for your specific speaker system and room conditions. The system features an easy-to-follow menu display and includes a plug-in calibration microphone.

The quality of sound you get out of a receiver will always be dictated mostly by your speakers, so when buying an AVR you really want to concentrate on the features, and the power.

The HK AVR 1710 has cutting edge features, but also has a number of issues.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    PROS:
    1. Two HDMI outs (with 3D pass-through): If your setup includes multiple screens you can keep this hooked up to both simultaneously and easily switch between them. Especially useful though if you have abnormal viewing angles on 3D TVs and thus have two set up. Not necessarily useful to most people, but nice to have.

    2. Future proof wireless connectivity (assuming it's close to an Ethernet connection): Bluetooth is built in, but once you connect the 1710 to your router you can use it to stream audio content via all the methods listed in the description. (Airplay, vTuner, etc.)

    3. Option to set up with front height speakers, instead of surround back (I find this provides a fuller surround experience)

    4. True second zone sound. There are two ways to set this up, either a two channel second zone powered by the receivers internal amplifier (which makes this into a 5.1 system) or even better, through the Zone 2 out you can connect to an external amplifier, thus preserving your 7 channel sound (which also means you can easily power more speakers, depending on the strength of the amplifier.) In either case you can send different inputs to each zone, with some limitations.

    5. HDMI ARC (on the first HDMI output): This means the first output acts as both an output and an input, i.e. it can transfer digital sound from the TV to the AVR.

I was pretty excited to get my AVR1710. I have had 2 NADs before this one and was happy to be going to a receiver that had video output. The video quality was really good, but it wasn't long until I had problems.
I had a get-together and somebody wanted to hook their iphone up to the receiver and play some music they had. No problem. Hooked it up through the analog and it worked great. However, when I switched it back to HDMI, I found that there was no sound. I moved cables around, powered it off and on, and changed settings galore, but no sound on any input. Finally, I unplugged the power and plugged it back in. That finally fixed it.
The next day, I tried to call HK for support. Couldn't get anything but automated responses. Really helpful. So I went on their website and sent them a message. TWO WEEKS LATER- still nothing. NO response at all.
So I did some digging online. Apparently this is an issue that HK KNOWS about and has known since they first released the product. Supposedly it's a firmware problem, but they have yet to release an update. Through some trial and error, I discovered that this problem doesn't only affect analog to digital changes, but also bluetooth connections. This makes it so I have to power off (by unplugging) the damned thing any time I use my tablet to stream music over BT.

The unit is a pretty good idea itself, but HK's support is worthless. DO NOT BUY.

I am a LONG time fan of Harman Kardon receivers. In fact just seeing the name branded on the product instilled a sense of quality for me as a consumer. Unfortunately, I was mistaken to assume as much. Out of the box it's truly beautiful, sleek, and very eye-catching. The unit is extremely lightweight and has a plethora of connections both physical and wireless.

The problems started immediately. After setting up the unit it was obvious how the sound quality was not the same as my HK AVR347. After tweaking the speaker levels on my own, the sound started to become better, but not the same crispness and clear highs as my former receiver. These were annoyances, but what made this an awful mistake was the eventual hardware failure that ensued.

First it came as a random flicker of the video. The video display flashed black for 10-15 seconds at a time at random intervals. The network update for the firmware never worked, the Bluetooth connection was finicky at best, and when switching sources the audio would sometimes cut out entirely. I though that perhaps I had bought a lemon, but after a search of the internet I found several cases stating the same issues were present in their receivers.

Harman Kardon has obviously taken a downturn in their quality department. I am currently sending the unit back now for a full refund and will be looking at a Marantz or Onkyo receiver to replace this mistake. I hope this helps you in your decision-making process.

Got my AVR1710 in January 2014. The first unit lasted about 2 weeks before it began to over heat and turn itself off, it was on a shelf with 24" of headroom. Customer service tried to help by reading back to me the frequently asked questions & solutions found on their website. The replacement unit that HK sent to me lasted a little longer, 15 weeks this time. Customer service was better this time, I called told them the problem and they immediately issued an RA. I have no confidence that the unit I should receive soon will last more than a few months.

If you are considering the HK1710 my advice is DO NOT BUY!
