Recently my Pioneer DVD player died after several years of use. One of the main reasons I liked that player was it seemed to play everything I asked DVD, CD, VCD, SVCD.When looking for a new player I wanted to get a Progressive Scan to use with my HD Panasonic Big Screen. I bought a Samsung DVD player but it did a very poor job playing my VCDs created using ULead DVD picture show. The picture was good ,but the audio was too fast. I read some reviews of the HK and decided to jump at it since most reviews said it would play anything you throw at it. The truth is that it does! MP3, CD-RW, CD-R, VCD, SCVD and of course your DVDs. First thing you will notice about the player is the weight. It feels like the solid product that it is. If you want to use the Progressive Scan you will need to change the settings. That is made easy through an On-Screen guide. The DA converters even have settings so you can make sure they match best through your AV receiver. It has a Test feature where you can make sure all your settings are correct for the best picture possible. This gives you a quick way to fine-tune your TV's brightness, contrast, and color settings The picture is clear and the player makes almost no noise. It does a great job with CD music too. I don't use my Sony changer as much anymore.

Great unit. Great quality. Good price. I only wish it did stills (JPEGs). Error correction good on disks with bad/corrupted missing blocks. I have a DVD I tried to rip on my PC. Software caught the bad block on defective disk and halted, yet the Harman Kardon DVD doesn't skip a single frame when it same disk at the same spot. The weight of this unit is almost twice that of a comparable JVC XV-s502/s500 I purchased as a gift. Really sturdy! Great price for a component quality DVD. All the mass- market units range about $129-$179 at discount or instead the higher end component DVD's all start around $500/$600/$700+ and many don't play MP3's, CD-RW's and other formats. This is a good mid-point price, component, value choice. Great features, great audio/video, Test picture to adjust TV quality, Mutli-function remote, Harman Kardon quality are all plusses! Paid about $269 at local discout electronics store. Nice appearance - mix of black w/ silver trim, looks expensive.

I own the european version, for som reason HK has decided to ship this version with the Progressive setting disabled, but luckily both that and region restrictions can be fixed with a firmware update. The DVD25 performs extremely well, with very good picture and sound quality. CD playback is also painless, this is really a one in all unit, the system ofcourse supports output of composite, Y/C, component YUV as well as RGB, and the picture brightness, contrast and saturation can be adjusted on the fly using the ezmenu. Basically Ive never been in contact with a better unit.
