This book is, in my opinion, an indispensible resource for Conductors and Performers. Professor Swain's insights concerning not only harmonic rhythm but his methods for analyzing are , what I consider to be, indispensible tools for conductors AND performers. It is a shame it has taken me 10 years to find this groundbreaking book! Harmonic rhythm as a concept for interpretation has somehow fallen to the wayside since the term was first used by Walter Piston. It IS harmonic rhythm which informs all gesture and phrasing for musicians, or should!

This book is a must for any serious musician or music lover, especially anyone interested in using harmonic ideas to add to the rhythmic integrity of a composition (classical, rock, etc.; the ideas are relevent across the spectrum of styles). Dr. Swain does a great job of explaining a difficult topic in a clear and understandable fashion. This is one of the best music theory texts I have had the pleasure of studying.

The musical examples are simply impossible to read... I don't know if I've been unlucky, but on numerous pages I cannot even see the lines of the musical system!
