Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2012 release, the third studio album from the Stoner Metal band led by Steve Brookes. Harmonicraft was self-produced by Torche and mixed by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou.

Review

''(Harmonicraft) follows the 2010 mini album Songs for Singles, though it feels like the descendent of their stronger 2008 breakthrough Meanderthal. As ''Kicking'' suggests, despite the new lineup and imprint, vocalist/guitarist Steve Brooks' knack for sludgy pop anthems remains unchanged.'' --Pitchfork.com

''If the first single ''Kicking'' is any indication, it's going to be an absolute hellbeast of an LP. ''Kicking'' is the sort of hugely catchy bulldozer that nobody does quite like this band. --Stereogum.com

If new song ''Kicking'' is any indication, Harmonicraft is the logical successor to Meanderthal, suggesting that perhaps it was a sonic difference that prompted the band to separate Songs for Singles from their full lengths with a different album format designation. This song is why you love Torche, and it's all here: fuzzed out stoner bass, spacey, glimmery guitars, soaring major key choruses and Steve Brooks' unmistakable voice.'' --Metal Sucks.com

I wasn't sure Torche could top Meanderthal, but, then again, why did I ever doubt this merry band of poppy doom metal professors? Meanderthal, while amazing, seems slight and short compared to Harmonicraft. Each and every song on Harmonicraft is excellent, and nary a few seconds pass by without another hook cramming itself into your mind. Torche is the catchiest truly heavy band of all time, and Harmonicraft is their signature statement to date. "Kicking" is the best Torche song yet, a perfect summer metal anthem. "In Pieces" shows off some Houdini and Stoner Witch era Melvins influences to great effect. Back to back burners "Snakes Are Charmed" and "Sky Trials" sound like High On Fire performing in neon bathing suits at a beach bar under palm trees (ok, not a pleasant mental image if you've seen Matt Pike shirtless lately, but it's a decent METAL comparison, musically speaking). Let's not forget that all these songs are short as hell, by and large. But before you know it, you can't stop humming the main riff to a song that's 1:18 long. File under "heavy metal songwriting genius."

Steve Brooks absolutely kills the vocals on this record. His voice soars and his choruses are deadly - "Kicking" and "Roaming" and "Kiss Me Dudely" just cannot be removed from the brain once listened to. The end of the record, while as perfect as the rest of it, also happens to be very encouraging. The achingly gorgeous shoegaze of "Solitary Traveler" (again, so short, yet packs so much punch) and the deft krautrock nods in the instrumental title track show that this band isn't set on one thing, and will continue to grow and refine their sound.

why this band isn't huge is a mystery. Perhaps the catchiest, most melodic band to surface in the last ten years - with the bonus of riffs that blast cracks in your skull. Steve Brooks is David Lee Roth crossed with Jack Black - fronting a relentlessly vicious groove not experienced since, well, since Van Halen. If you have the time, check out Tilts. Same thing. Same riffage.

Saw these guys on tour with Kylesa and High on Fire a few years ago and liked "Meanderthal" so I figured I had to pick this one up, especially after the pre release taster "Kicking" dug it's riff claws so deep inside me. Normally when that happens I am somewhat disappointed with the rest of the album but this thing slays and punishes from beginning to end and you can almost hum along to it. No let up from start to finish or weak moments. Very catchy and HEAVY, not an easy combination to pull off. Been playing this daily since I got it. Highly recommended.

All is sunny and vibrant in Torche-land apparently and it shows in their newest l.p. Harmonicraft. Never have I been so amazed with an album cover matching it's sonic counterpart more, than the Lewis Carrol meets Care Bears cover art, making sweet sweet love with this blasted piece of punky-pop-sludge-bliss. While older Torche fans may wallow in sorrow over departure of fellow founding lead-guitarist Juan Montoya, one must observe the subtle reality that is, Steve Brooks IS Torche!!! No if's ands or buts about that. And Harmonicraft proves the rule and sometimes the exception to the rule. Very rarely, the skilled psychedelic touch of Montoya is missed and would provide crucial shred to the proceedings. Mostly however, this is a Torche album that stands on it's own as a different, albeit pleasant, beast! The light air that bounces these songs around is also mixed with that trademarked sludgey, downtuned guitar, that make Torche so much more than the sum of their parts. While older albums are still tops in my book, I won't overlook the merit in what is without a doubt, the most diverse, and well written album they've ever produced. Love it or leave it, I'm cool right here!

First, kudos to the sound engineers. This album sounds fantastic. Second, even though the musicianship throughout is great, the drumming is a standout. GREAT DRUMMER. The songs are catchy. I find myself listening to this CD more than any other at the moment. If you like metal you will love it.

I'm a big fan of sludge metal and this band (and especially this album!) does a great job of adding something new: a bit of joy. It's upbeat while still having some great heavy riffs. I'd recommend this to just about anyone whose a fan of rock or metal.

I bought this album randomly from my local shop, but I loved it so much I wanted a backup copy to archive. It comes with a digital download of the full album, and a slip mat (awesome) plus the album itself is pressed on clear vinyl. Super Cool!
