From the Back Cover

Ten-year-old James McDonough moves from the crime and violence of the inner-city to a New Englandish East Coast town, Harmony Bay. His widowed mother, Dory, has taken a position as a librarian in this small town. Its economy is driven by the whims of nature, nor'easters boiling down the coast, hurricanes lurking off shore, and the barometric rise and fall of shellfish prices.
Relationships combine with places to play a part in James' life story. James'  character is forged by events and his adventures in Harmony Bay. From harrowing life and death experiences on the water to forays into the surrounding hills, each day dawns with a new lesson about life. The boy encounters many wonderful individuals in his new home town. Among them are a magnificent Newfoundland retriever dog named Angus--and Chloe, a beautiful white mare.  Angus' master Billy is a kindly closet intellectual and philosophizer who is a physically powerful man strong enough to split firewood with a single blow of his ancient axe.  His snowy white beard and recluse nature causes speculation about his identity.
Marine biologist Jake Kane is the local hero who sweeps Dory off her feet, adding an element of romance to the story.   James learns a great deal from Jake and the dozens of other colorful inhabitants of this amazing waterfront community.
Harmony Bay, written for a wide audience that appeals to many levels, examines a slice of small-town life. A modern day mystery, drawn from covert events of the American Revolution, weaves through the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up! January 16, 2011
Format:Paperback
Harmony Bay pushes all of the buttons. Tom Gahan knows how to tug the heartstrings and puts the reader in the story with precise description and lifelike characters. In fact, the characters are the centerpiece and carry the plot through to the finish. Gahan's insight of dramatic storms that affect coastal areas is breathtaking. Harmony Bay gives a vivid sense of what it would be like to live in a coastal community. The delivery of information about the American Revolution and the segues into that time period are extremely well done. It makes examining a little history very enjoyable. Harmony Bay is an idyllic place. I wouldn't mind living there myself. Harmony Bay - An adventurous slice of waterfront life where mystery surrounds history, is a real page-turner. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional debut novel January 21, 2011
Format:Paperback
Set against the backdrop of the idyllic waterfront location of Harmony Bay, Tom Gahan has weaved a wonderful tale, full of intrigue, mystery, adventure, action, and a twist of romance.
Dory McDonough is a young widow; taking her ten year old son, James, she moves to Harmony Bay, a small town, hoping to build a better life for herself and her son. Dory soon learns that there are perils that lurk in the bay that could be just as dangerous as any found in a big city. There are quite a few nail-biting moments contained in this action/adventure.
As Dory and James settle in to life in the waterfront town, they get to know their neighbours, some of whom are eccentric, but all of whom are friendly and welcoming. The community in Harmony Bay soon becomes like an extended family for Dory and James. The backstory about the mysterious Christian Carroll--once a resident of the bay--is enchanting.
The portrayal of Dory, the single mother wanting to do the best for her son, with all the financial challenges, and her nervousness about introducing a new man into her son's life, is all very realistic and believable. The book is filled with larger than life, well developed characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and could hardly tear myself away from it.
Tom Gahan is a truly gifted author who is able to fully engage the reader with his prose. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages who like escapism and adventure.
With the references to the American Revolution, the information about shellfish research, fishing techniques, among other things, there is much to learn from this book. It would be a great addition to any English Literature book lists for secondary schools, as I believe young readers would be enthralled by ten year old James's adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Beach Read June 13, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A thoroughly enchanting narrative about small town life in a waterfront community. The residents of Harmony Bay welcome young widow, Dory, and her young son into their community, as well as their lives. The adventures they share are intertwined with historical intrigue, coming of age, romance with a alluring stranger and a charming cast of hometown locals who could be your own neighbors. The authors descriptions offer a clear picture of the town of Harmony Bay, reminiscent of small beachfront communities in any coastal area. His quirky characters contain elements of people we have all known. The storyline is believable and detailed. There is much little-known history which needs a voice, and the mastery which the author exhibits integrating history and characterization in Harmony Bay lends itself well to future historical novels. Based on this debut book, I hope to read more from Tom Gahan. Kudos!
